This is what happens when bros who listen to self help productivity podcasts take over the machine of government

Another grim trial in France opens on Monday. My report in the Observer. www.theguardian.com/society/2025...

Why is it more expensive to be poor in Britain? Low-to-middle income households in Britain fare worse than their German. French and Dutch counterparts.

*New* campaign action on Marks & Spencer - any help getting the first few signatures going would be greatly appreciated! actionstorm.org/petitions/ma... We're sharing this first on Bluesky as this is so much friendlier (and troll free, so far at least!) than any of the other platforms right now!

I don’t like saying this but BBC News is utterly failing in its coverage of Trump. Go elsewhere to find out what is actually happening

Reform is surging in the polls as voters grow disillusioned with politics. Can Labour counter Farage’s appeal with real change?| David Taylor-Gooby @northeastbylines.co.uk

16,522 people are still waiting for mental health treatment after 18 months, compared to 2,059 people facing the same delay for elective physical health treatments.

Another great podcast from BBC Sounds www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/serie...

“The more I learn about the ferocious resolve of Ukrainian healthcare workers to keep looking after their patients, the greater my respect for their efforts and my desire to bear witness” @doctoroxford.bsky.social

I'm starting to think this might not be about replacing an unqualified DEI hire with someone more qualified.

It was never going to be just trans people.

All vice chancellors should also take and reinstate respect for subjects paying attention to language, writing, and critical analysis ... "writing is a generative activity. We write to figure out what we think ... If we offload the task of writing onto an AI, we lose the opportunity to think."

Baroness Deech on Network Rail and others: "....the decisions they take at their computers and behind their desks are mechanical, impersonal, incompetent, unfeeling, and just plain wrong in this case, because they do not heed the needs and daily lives of those affected."

The whole "Won't somebody think of the poor racists?" schtick would be more noteworthy if the parties currently commanding 3/4 of Britons' voting intention weren't openly and loudly thinking of the poor racists, and nobody else, every damned day.

The government of the USA is openly racketeering. And that is not even the worst thing about them. ‘Owning the libs’ is doing a heck of a lot of heavy lifting right now…

Jeez. US could cut Ukraine's access to Starlink internet services over minerals, say sources. Trump’s government are behaving like mobsters www.reuters.com/business/us-...

*NEWS* I’m so pleased to say @waterstones.bsky.social has chosen Who Wants Normal? to be a special pre-order: 25% off for this weekend only. You get all my best jokes but at a bargain price for a hardback. Offer ends 23.59 Monday 24th. Pre-order here: www.waterstones.com/book/who-wan...

Nigel Farage gets caught lying about Trump on camera and ADMITS IT!!! 😍🤣😍🤣😍

As ever: never trust a government that pretends it’s possible to create backdoors in encryption only they (or “the good guys”) can use. This stuff always leaves everyone less secure, benefitting criminals and adversaries. www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

Half of Gen Z see Britain as stuck in the past and a racist country Stuck in the past: 50% of Gen Z Britons say it is true A racist country: 48% A tolerant country: 47% Am proud to be British: 41% A united country: 15% yougov.co.uk/topics/enter...

Charlotte Wright, a 30-year-old from Bolton, was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis when she was just 19. She fears the government’s upcoming disability benefit reforms could prevent her – and others living with the condition – from getting outdoors. Read her thoughts below. ⬇️ https://bit.ly/4b864j0

I think the most repulsive thing about all this is the pointlessly cruel wording of the form letters they're firing people with, suggesting the various agency staff are at fault for daring to be public servants. Performative malice as people's lives are irreparably blighted by ignorant bullies.

Universities are major employers. This is a huge blow for the community as a whole, especially somewhere within a large rural area like Bangor.

“A new administration in the USA which was indifferent to the suffering of Ukraine and the problems of Europe is a big problem for the continent. An America which is friendlier to Russia than it is to Europe is an existential issue.” www.theneweuropean.co.uk/james-ball-t...

I love this quote from her paper which has me feeling CBT overuse on my skin. "I was thrilled to have discovered such a treasure trove of clinical wisdom. At the same time, I was angry that psychodynamic theory had been relegated to the cellar while CBT seemed to be in the water supply."

You know this is 100% going to happen…

not surprising. @parismarx.com did an episode on shopify last year. didn’t know about its far right connections until i listened techwontsave.us/episode/232_...

They tried to cancel John Crace from covering the right-wing jamboree at ExCel but no one can stop him filing copy this good www.theguardian.com/politics/202...

Some of the content that appears on mental health social media accounts is so odd. I don’t know anyone with experience of mental illness who has a problem with the framing ‘I have (or had) X’, myself included. Surely this isn’t evidence based? (NB I’m not talking about neurodivergence)

UK immigration policy is stuck in a race to the bottom – with human traffickers the only winners

The EU has launched a big new package of sanctions against Russia targeting the aluminium industry, oil exports shadow fleet and various individuals and entities, the FT reports. This comes as America prepares to loosen sanctions to cosy up with War Criminal Vladimir Putin.

Inflation is up by 3%, but private rents are up by 8.7% across the UK and 11%(!!!) in London. Across GB, it means paying ~£100 more per month on average since Jan 24, or ~£200 more per month since Jan 23. In London, £220 more per month since Jan 24, or ~£400(!) more per month since Jan 23.

That's a risk we'll just have to take

Trump’s framing of these talks is so wrong. 1) Why does Russia have any right to any sovereign Ukrainian territory? 2) Why’s the US “mediating”? Have both parties asked it to? 3) How can the US be a mediator when it’s seeking its own material gain from at least one party? 4) Why exclude Europe?
