“Senior Penn administrators met with Pennsylvania lawmakers on Tuesday morning to discuss the University’s rollback of diversity, equity, and inclusion policies, with multiple elected officials expressing concern about recent changes — and one calling the meeting “bullshit.”” 😬

Happy Birthday to WEB Du Bois, who wrote about the wildly important concept of psychological wages of whiteness in the first history of Reconstruction, *Black Reconstruction in America*, which he messily dedicated to his mistress, Dr. Virginia Alexander, and not his wife, Nina Gomer #BookSky

what if we just *didn't* write conclusion paragraphs? what if we all just agreed to stop... amirite?

One of the greatest and most brilliant American authors of all time was born today! Happy birthday to Toni Morrison. There aren’t sufficient words of praise and gratitude 💕♥️

Some higher ed organizations who are loudly circling the wagons against federal funding cuts were oddly silent or circumspect about the earlier attacks on CRT and DEI. I wish there was a better understanding that these attacks are coming because we failed to repel those.

Oh boy…

Kendrick’s American flag motif at THIS MOMENT is subversive. Yes, yes, yes.

In honor of Alice Walker's birthday today, one of my favorite quotes of hers (of many profound ones) which has guided me from my entry into adult womanhood until now: “I’m hardly desperate for anything really. I feel that whatever is mine is looking for me.” 💜

I'm 2 episodes into the Scamanda series and I must say I think the podcast was better, so far! Both great but the production and genius of the storytelling in the podcast was SO well done that I forgot that there was no visual component lol

We need to break the propaganda of “all young white men who use computers must be geniuses” before it literally destroys the United States of America.

Andreessen Horowitz hiring Daniel Perry exemplifies what debates over preferential treatment are really all about. White men are actually rewarded professionally and personally by other white men for their willingness to commit acts of violence against people who threaten white male dominance.

So today I learned who Curtis Yarvin is… the guy whose ideas are greatly influencing Vance, Trump, Musk, etc. www.theguardian.com/us-news/2024...

. A Black spy saved George Washington’s life, helped win the Revolutionary War, and still had to buy his freedom. If America really loved Black history, James Armistead Lafayette would have his own blockbuster spy movie by now. Instead, we get another reboot of Batman. #BlackHISTORY

Excited to share my (first!) academic publication exploring Christian TikTok and attempts to spiritualize the unpredictability of algorithmic recommendation. Thank you to @corrinalaughlin.bsky.social for an amazing collaborative process. journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/...

Just realized the university didn’t even bother to wish us a happy black history month. A lot of things happening but that kind of stung.

I am writing about what is happening to federal personnel policy. One difficulty is that it's hard to observe and verify what is actually happening. I am particularly interested in information about the employment status of individuals working with/in DOGE. Anonymous tips welcome. Signal: Nbednar.46

Another great episode considering how much has happened this week. I’m in such awe and gratitude to Professor Heather Cox Richardson for these daily letters — open.substack.com/pub/heatherc...

In hindsight’s it’s amazing that my VA public school even taught us about the great nadir. Many people have no idea/conception of it.

HAPPY NEW YEAR, BLACK PEOPLE!

It's February which means it's #BlackHistoryMonth & I've said before I love #BHM. This month, I'm going to share a resource with a focus on Black history that I had a hand in making every day. Starting today with my Slavery & Resistance in NYC Walking Tour: Slavery and Resistance in NYC Walking Tour

Black Lives Matter fundamentally broke these people’s brains. They couldn’t bear the idea that they might have to tell a different story about this country and thus tell a different story about themselves. They hated it, and now they are using everything they have to never feel that way again.

Unfortunately the stuff that most people are consuming online to distract themselves from politics (or because they don’t care about politics at all or think politics are going swimmingly) is also a covert pipeline designed to make them more conservative. Lifestyle, entertainment, pop culture, etc

if you are overwhelmed by news bombardment either on social media or from article after article but want to keep a high-level pulse on what trump's admin is doing/what it means, historian Heather Cox Richardson does a daily letter/explainer podcast style. open.substack.com/pub/heatherc...

Do you know why a president would do all the most evil and heinous shit via Executive Order? Because his party can't easily make it law. And if they can't make it law, they can't make it last. Don't let anyone make you feel like this is The End. Do not let them demoralize you. Live to see them die.

Happy lunar new year! 🧧 🐍✨

i've said "imperial boomerang" to myself at least once a week for literally the last year. like legit year.

Learned who Dr. Joy James was by accident in 2024 and have been obsessed with her brilliance ever since. here's an opportunity to see her speak (virtual)

I’m happy for Demi but I feel like they’re doing this because it’s Demi. The Substance was solid but I don’t think it was in even the top 5 horror films to come out in the last several years. Also justice for Toni Collette, Sophie Wilde, Mia Goth, and Lupita! 😭

"What we've do in our lab is that we give young people a moment to pause and say, 'Oh, I didn't even realize what I was watching or how I was participating in it.'" - Prof. @dupatton.bsky.social discusses teens streaming school fights and how @safelab.bsky.social helps youth to process violence.
