I gave this talk earlier today and it went great! Big thanks to the organizers for giving me the opportunity for my very first presentation on my experiences as an autistic person in STEM and how we can improve the environment for our neurodivergent colleagues and students.

Disappointing example of pathologization through ignorance. The puzzle-piece iconography is widely considered harmful (or even hate-speech) in the autistic community because it implies that autistic people are missing a critical piece of humanity. Also it's infantilizing. #ActuallyAutistic

April 2 is World Autism Awareness Day. Academics can support our autistic colleagues and students by actively challenging narratives that frame autistic traits as undesirable. For more tips, see my autistic-friendly research group guide: arxiv.org/pdf/2410.17929 ⚛️🧪 #WomenInSTEM #ActuallyAutistic
