Recently, we held the first #scverse SpatialData 3-day hackathon in Basel (Switzerland), where we brought together 20 developers from the Python, R, and web communities to work on interoperability, performance, and ergonomics for spatial omics data. Here is what we worked on!

It’s been a real fun (& productive) event, as well as a great demo of how R/Bioc and Python/scverse communities can come together to pursuit mutually beneficial (vs. redundant/diverging) efforts. — Thanks @scverse.bsky.social & all of the SpatialData team for having us!

As Saint Nicholas is coming to a close, these were my fav (non-science) 📖s of '24: 💻 Living Computers, A Brazma — from snowflakes to Asimov & GEB to ML... A rare read by a rare (& lovely) mind. ☁️ The Discovery of Heaven, H Mulisch — a tome so great, I read it the 2nd time & am still sad it ended.

Interested in spatial statistics for spatial omics data? Check out our new resource: pasta. We show how different technologies lead to different data modalities give and overview of point-pattern and lattice-based spatial analysis. Feedback welcome! arxiv.org/abs/2412.01561

A little piece that's been in the works with former MSc, now PhD student, Jiayi Wang & @markrobinsonca.bsky.social in the multi-sample/-condition/-subpopulation theme: ...

My brother wrote a thesis summary in Greek, and that’s gotta be the singular best thing I’ve seen. So aesthetic… Although I can’t say that I understand the math.

Great read!! Can recommend -- "Academics have their own mythology. We view ourselves as fiercely independent, objective truth-seekers. Our research is curiosity-driven & its impact is measured through the respect of our esteemed peers. We combine this with the education of the next generation, ...

So I just discovered that one can `setMethod`s on multiple S4 signatures with a `for`-loop 🤯 and go from many to ~5 lines 🤩 So now you know. #rstats
