In our recent paper, Anvar Sanaei shows that root traits of 'absorptive fine roots' relate to tree growth! In fact, they are better predictors than traits of 'transport fine roots'. www.nature.com/articles/s42... But there is more to it... 🧵

I’m very happy to share our latest paper on arbuscular mycorrhizal traits. link.springer.com/article/10.1...

I usually reserve this account for my personal views; but today I want to represent my position as President of @asn-amnat.bsky.social to post a message that will shortly go out to the membership of the American Society of Naturalists from the ASN Executive Council

Really nice to see the second paper of PhD student Fangbin Hou out in SBB!!! She did a massive experiment and found that across 17 grassland species, root exudates from plants that experienced drought trigger more microbial respiration. (1) www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

Wow, so nice to see this work out, led by Chris Sweeney! he shows, in a massive experiment, that plant traits and phylogenetic relatedness are poor predictors of plant–soil feedbacks. In @journalofecology.bsky.social besjournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/...

Very happy to share a new paper, just out in New Phytologist: Concurrent common fungal networks formed by different guilds of fungi Open access 🧪 @newphyt.bsky.social nph.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/...

How is everyone dealing with issues of Web of Science making completely false links of citations or associating authorship to completely unrelated authors? I am trying to link one of my papers to my profile but WoS insists that it was actually 'Juliane' instead of me co-authoring the paper?

Da schau an: Die DFG verlässt X! Again: Gute Argumente in der Wissenschaftspolitik zahlen sich aus. Hartnäckigkeit ebenso. #eXit @zolke.bsky.social

Bad. But how bad? I once asked myself, while finding fakes in the Scientific Report @natureportfolio.bsky.social. So I decide to "do my our research" - I took 100 articles in a row from Physical sciences that contains diffraction. Result - 15 fakes out 100. Details in the 🧵 #ResearchIntegrity 1/x

New study led by Ana Elizabeth Bonato Asato published in @journalofecology.bsky.social 🌱🪱 Plant diversity increases above- and below-ground ecosystem functioning and their phenological synchrony, but effects on traits vary across seasons. doi.org/10.1111/1365...

📣Paper out about plant and fungi 🌱🍄co-authored by our own Thom Kuyper 🤩! "root economics space and plant species richness jointly determine the effects of plants on soil fungal communities and their potential role in plant fitness and ecosystem functioning" 🔽 onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/...

What a nice start to 2025! The second chapter of my PhD is now out in Ecology Letters! onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.1...

It was an absolute pleasure to be part of the thematic session at #BES2024 lead by @moniqueweemstra.bsky.social and @kaaze7.bsky.social. I presented work on holistic belowground functioning by the #sUnderfoot group including results from @josephtumber.bsky.social and @jitkaklimesova.bsky.social

Check out this thread that demonstrates the widespread downstream benefits of funding basic science. Lots of great examples here. (NZ has just halved its funding of basic science in its main basic science fund.)

This paper was a massive team effort that culminated in a simple story: More biodiverse communities of invertebrates, in both terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, have a higher content of "good fats" that are available for predators (e.g. bird, bats, fish, etc...). doi.org/10.1126/scie...

First outcome of our retreat: we're here now! 🪲 For obvious reasons, we've not been online in the other place for some time, but we are excited to reconnect here. We will be sharing our latest research, project news and job offers here 🌱

I made a Root Scientists Starter Pack go.bsky.app/46hHLm3! Let me know in the comments or DM if you'd like to be added #roots #rootscientists
