Retired software dev. he/him. I often discuss City of Toronto budget design and support issues. IMO government is a collective enterprise, and should be fully transparent and forcefully managed for the well-being of people and the health of the planet.

The bank of the Seine in Paris used to be space for cars. Now for several years it’s been a special place for people in a city making more & more of them. All it took was leadership. Oh, and fighting and winning a court battle when that leadership was challenged. HT @emmanuelspv.bsky.social for pic.

Trump is following three courses of action: elimination, transformation, and subjugation. In her latest policy brief, Celia Belin unpacks how this playbook threatens Europe’s institutions, alliances, and democratic resilience. bit.ly/4iTWXoB

People feel more lonely, in part because so many of our relationships are mediated by social media. Instead of atoning for the harms of his platforms, Mark Zuckerberg has a new tech solution: he’s going to give us all a bunch of Meta-powered AI friends. It’s an even more dystopian future.

Huge opportunity for the Don’t Know Party.

I don't know about the veracity of this, but it's interesting...

Re-watching this charming period piece, based on a true story of Italy's first female lawyer. Also Lidia's clothing design is spectacular. www.netflix.com/title/81414644

I'm a big fan of outgoing head of Toronto's Housing Secretariat Abi Bond, and this is a good exit interview. What strikes me - & she's far too good a political operator to state this - is how crazy-making working with the ON govt must be storeys.com/abigail-bond...

Toronto’s neighbourhoods are losing local storefronts fast. ‘Buy local’ is having an effect, but experts say more can be done to keep the shops that make neighbourhoods vibrant.

DOGE will have serious consequences—but as an effort to reduce federal spending, Elon Musk’s project is laughable, @jessicabriedl.bsky.social writes.

Doug Ford has failed miserably to protect Ontario from a surge of #measles. The premier campaigned on a promise to “Protect Ontario,” but his government has not kept that pledge on a pressing matter of public health, by @reggcohn.bsky.social www.thestar.com/politics/pol... via @thestar.com

This is obvious but it needs to be repeated every single day. Republicans in the House and Senate own 100% of what Trump is doing.

Calling bikes “just for kids” is how we ended up with clogged roads and broken cities. This is real transportation, not a toy for recreation.

A frequent argument in favour of allowing hate speech on social website nowadays is the rhetorical question "who gets to decide what's free speech?" That's the same as saying "who gets to decide what's criminal?" It's a weak and lazy argument. The answer is: social consensus expressed in law.
