My first impression of Avowed is honestly is that it is a a good game. Yeah, it's not as open, dynamic, and reactive as Skyrim. It is, however an open world RPG that has more of a focus on telling you a story and experiencing that story and so far it is doing really well. I do have a few gripes.

I don't think gamers really understand how bad things are in games right now. You won't really feel The consequences of all those layoffs for another few years. But I see so many devs that are just done with the whole industry.
