Hey, did you know there's an alternative to ChatGPT that makes sense economically and doesn't destroy the environment? It's called English majors and they will happily fix all of your documents for the low price of health insurance and a living wage.

Arguing schools need to teach "AI literacy" is entirely corporate marketing or geopolitical "new space race" rubbish now. It eradicates the history of media/digital literacies as *critical* programs to support informed consumers and creators. It just means accustomization to prompting for BS jobs.

For National Library Week, we can't recommend enough @shannonmattern.bsky.social's 2014 essay "Library as Infrastructure." A decade on, it remains a potent argument for libraries as social, technological & intellectual infrastructure — part of a critical network of institutions buoying public life.

I've now seen a second instance of a quote attributed to me in a news paper I've never heard of (and certainly was not interviewed for). In general, if the quote includes the phrase 'AI' with no scare quotes or other distance, that's a good sign it's not real.

One small nudge that I make in my #AIResistance pedagogy is the use of "Completion Statements" for student blog postings. We make an ethical agreement that we've resisted the use of GenAI in our writing⎯for the sake of our writing improvement & developing our unique writing voices, warts & all!

We know that the Conservatives have played dirty pool with the media during this election campaign. They've tried to rig the game to control the message. It's crystal clear. #GiftLink 🎁 (Globe allows a certain number free access.) #CdnPoli www.theglobeandmail.com/gift/90e3098...

Not a great sign when the first federal leader to bring gender based violence into the election campaign is... Pierre Poilievre. (This isn't actually about making life safer for women. It's about them pushing their tough on crime agenda. But Singh and Carney now have to play catch-up on this file)

Can we just cancel April Fools' Day this year? The last thing we need right now is more disinformation-based shocks.

What are the most enjoyable books you have read* or re-read so far this year? The ones you'd really like others to read, too. (*On paper, on screen, or via audiobook.)

We are teaching kids that kindness is NOT people pleasing. You can be kind and set boundaries. You can be kind and say no despite someone else’s feelings. You can be kind and advocate for yourself. You can be kind and disagree with people.

We need to tread eugenics with the seriousness we treat the most vile forms of bigotry because eugenics is what turns those bigotries into action items.

If you live in Ontario, a concrete thing you can do to protect Canadian interests from American encroachment or straight up invasion is to vote out Ford. He is on the record as happy that Trump was elected and has given $100 million contract to Elon Musk. Vote him out!

“If you're not careful, the newspapers will have you hating the people who are being oppressed, and loving the people who are doing the oppressing.” A classic quote from Malcolm X, who was assassinated 60 years ago today.

This alone should be grounds for terminating Ontario’s contract with Starlink immediately.

❤️

Reporting is that all the kids with measles in Texas outbreak are unvaccinated, but something important to realize is that, because this vaccine is not 100% effective, anti-vax parents who refuse to vaccinate their kids also risk the lives of *other people's children* who have weak immune response

Really enjoyed Controlled Damage at the NAC tonight. I appreciated learning more about Viola Desmond’s life and highly recommend to any #ottawa folks!

There are a lot of things to dunk on with this post. But, if you think using an LLM is the way to deal with a json file (json is a ubiquitous, highly structured format for data storage), you are a bad, inexperienced coder. And, you definitely shouldn't be rewriting the US Treasury codebase.

Julie’s training is great!

One of the big reasons Doug Ford has only done interviews in US media is because his handlers know that Canadian interviewers might take the opportunity to ask questions about his record in Ontario and not just stick to tariffs. #OnPoli

Anybody who actually knows gender nonconforming kids could tell you that they are some of the most courageous people in the world. Let’s hope the rest of us can rise to their standard.

IMO: What AI should be doing: assisting experts in a field with tasks that require massive amounts of data analysis, speeding up their process. What AI should not be doing: simplifying complex subjects for non-experts who don't understand the underlying concepts or knowledge base.

The word "ungrading" is an active present participle. It doesn't mean "not grading." Ungrading acknowledges the existence of grades and invites systemic critique, an undoing or thoughtful dismantling. Not best practices, but fluid, contextual practices to push against an insidious culture of grades.

If your goal this year is to read more books, remember: you don’t have to finish every book you start. If you’re halfway through and can’t stand the characters or just don’t care what happens, it’s okay to put it down. Life’s too short to read books you don’t love!
