Happy to share my first piece for @centeronbudget.bsky.social. This is on the magic math the House Budget Committee is using to pay for tax cuts for the wealthy (while cutting $2T of popular programs like Medicaid and SNAP). www.cbpp.org/blog/house-b...

Medicaid cuts thread! Here are three critical pieces you should read today to understand the impact of the cuts: 1) @joshbivens-econ.bsky.social blogpost showing that the bottom 40% of households would take a huge income cut due to Medicaid cuts. State analysis included: www.epi.org/blog/the-hou...

The Republican tax plan simply takes money from low-income Americans and gives it to the rich The proposed Medicaid cuts will devastate the incomes of the bottom 40% in every single state, according to a new analysis from @joshbivens-econ.bsky.social

All hands on deck red alert, please share broadly: Senate GOP budget resolution calls to cut Ag & Finance. This means they’re coming after SNAP & Medicaid. They are trying to take away nutrition & health care. The reconciliation bill is filibuster proof & so can be passed w/ their slim majority.

#JobsDay is here thanks to the incredible workers at the BLS. Payroll employment rose by 143,000 in January, and the unemployment rate edged down to 4.0 percent. There several revisions to incorporate this time-- follow @elisegould.bsky.social for more info.

Happy #JobsDay! At 8:30 am ET, BLS delivers the most-important signals abt how economy is changing. Forecasts’ center: +169K jobs Unemployment rate (UR) stable at 4.1% Lots of complexity today, so I'm posting this earlier-than-usual with a longer-than-usual preamble.

DATA RELEASE WHEN DATA FEELS SCARCE! Check out data.epi.org -a data repository with 78,000+ series on topics like employment, wages, poverty, and inequality. You can get many measures by gender, race and state! I've been working with our @epi.org team to build this and am so proud of the result

"If Trump, Musk and their allies... succeed, then the question of American politics won’t be if they’ll win the next election, but whether the Constitution as we know it is still in effect" - @jamellebouie.net understand the stakes www.nytimes.com/2025/02/05/o...

I've been reading and writing a lot on work requirements recently--They do not improve employment prospects and instead, end up kicking people off programs like SNAP and Medicaid. Shorter post here: www.epi.org/blog/work-re...

Compared to 2017, it feels like most of the institutions we count on to protect democracy are weaker now. The courts. The media. The Democratic Party. One institution, however, is *without doubt* in a stronger position to fight fascism now than in 2017: the American labor movement. Consider...

Voucher programs don’t just produce poor outcomes for students in them—they harm all kids by draining resources, staff, and programs from local schools. Every child deserves a fully funded education. bsky.app/profile/epi....

The labor market stuck the landing!!! Not much soft about it. We end the year with a strong jobs report: - Payroll employment up 256k - Unemployment rate ticked down to 4.1% - Labor force participation rate held steady - Overall and prime-age employment-to-population ratios ticked up #NumbersDay

I checked out of jobs day last month but clocking back in for it now and wow, market continues to be remarkably strong: unemp 4.1% and 256 payroll growth. Follow @elisegould.bsky.social for more context

How much do vouchers cost public schools? A new report from EPI's @hilwething.bsky.social examines the hidden costs of vouchers. She finds that public school students will bear the cost of children participating in voucher programs. #EduSky #EconSky www.epi.org/publication/...

Want to highlight a fascinating and useful new report and tool from my colleague @hilwething.bsky.social at @epi.org. It's about calculating the fiscal externalities of school vouchers. Don't know what that means? Hop in, let's talk about it!! 1/ www.epi.org/publication/...

Crucial new resource on the fiscal harm caused by school vouchers that, unlike voucher industry estimates, actually (shocker!) understands how state education budgets work. @epi.org www.epi.org/publication/...

New @epi.org report! By me! It focuses on a hidden but important source of stress that voucher programs can impose--the fiscal externality imposed on school districts when declines in student enrollment numbers intersect with the fixed nature of many school costs. (1/x) www.epi.org/publication/...

It's a big #NumbersDay!! Latest #EconSky data says the labor market is still going strong. After the softer numbers in October from the weather and striking workers, November bounces back with strong job growth along with upward revisions. On average, the economy added 173k jobs the last 3 months.

Latest #JOLTS data out this morning continues to show labor market strength. Job openings ticked up slightly in October and has normalized considerably over the last two and a half years since its peak in March 2022.

Just watched the Martha documentary and I can’t get over 1) she was never actually charged w insider trading (I had no idea) 2) Jim Comey was the lead prosecutor in her case!! History is wild

More of this! I deep appreciate @kevinrinz.bsky.social's transparency here. It makes all of us better researchers

“The Georgia committee’s most recent report found that of 113 pregnancy-related deaths from 2018 through 2020, 101 had at least some chance of being prevented.”

Some loose thoughts from the Mid-Career Mentoring panel I spoke at today #2024APPAM 1. Know yourself. Oftentimes when you’re on the early-career market you’re so excited to get a job you don’t take the time to ask “do I like this work? Does this feel like a good way to spend my time?”

This is going to be so good. @arpilarz.bsky.social is brilliant-- can't wait to watch!

#2024APPAM Nicolas Ziebarth shows a clear trend in the increase of paid sick leave access, confirming findings @elisegould.bsky.social and I found in our report last year www.epi.org/publication/...

Julia Goodman showing a very crowded paid leave landscape in CA during COVID

Great graph by Sarah Hodgeman showing the CCDF policy rules becoming more generous over time. Still very low take up of the policy though #2024APPAM

Head's up this is about to be an #2024APPAM account for the next two days. Tomorrow I'll be discussing papers at the COVID-19 Policy and Work-Related Inequality and New Research on Minimum Wage sessions. I'm also speaking at the Navigating the Mid-career Job Market panel. If you see me, say hi!
