Speaker Johnson suggesting elimination of disfavored district courts...

Very true, but missing the "and this is how we'll fix political contributions"

Another article showing that "swift, certain, and fair" punishment beats incarceration www.brookings.edu/articles/fro...

This week I left The Washington Post after 40 years, 6 months and 6 days. Today I have a piece in the New Yorker explaining my heart-breaking decision, and including the column that was spiked. I wish I never had to write it. www.newyorker.com/news/essay/w...

Excellent point about fundamentally misunderstanding how DDoS attacks work and ignoring who said they actually did the attack.

🚨NEW: US prisons & jails are locking up MORE people after a decade of decline, growing the incarcerated population by 2% But why? We answer that & bust the biggest myths of the carceral system in 2025's edition of Mass Incarceration: The Whole Pie👇 buff.ly/NDqIQ2i

The US has been added to the Civicus Monitor Watchlist, which identifies countries that the global civil rights watchdog believes are currently experiencing a rapid decline in civic freedoms.

It remains shocking that Congress refuses to eliminate slavery.

Having correct and sufficient data is critical and this is a great balance for court data.

My friends & comrades at Common Justice have opened the application process for their Practitioner's Lab. The 10-month cohort-based training & practice lab is available to practitioners who are committed to building pathways to divert cases of serious violence+ commonjustice.org/practitioner...?

Boils down to: 1) Everyone deserves quality health care 2) Bankruptcy laws are broken

NYC police overtime up. Support services down. Budgets are reflections of values, but not research apparently.

This is absolutely true and important for people to understand if we don't want to repeat the DC sentencing reform fiasco.

THEY'RE GOING TO ISSUE PERMANENT VISA BANS TO TRANS VISITORS TO THE US. This isn't just for athletes. The directive as stated applies to all visa applications made by trans folks and declare it material fraud to use a different gender marker on applications. www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025...

Excellent review of how "medically necessary" health care does not require timely, nor HIPAA-compliant, nor standard practice health care.

If Article I of the Constitution (separation of power) and the 14th Amendment (equal protection / birthright citizenship) don't exist, why should the 8th Amendment (cruel and unusual punishment)?

This year's Econ job market has, by all accounts, been brutal. If you're still not sure what you're doing next year, applying for external funding to continue your work is a great way to buy yourself time & options. It's a way to "build your own post-doc." Check out AV's open RFPs!

Figure 1 really highlights the jump. Authors estimate hundreds of excess infant deaths.

"New analysis shows 4.5% of jail bookings every year are of unhoused people": www.prisonpolicy.org/blog/2025/02...

Americans bought an estimated 1.29 million guns in January 2025, according to an analysis of FBI data. See how many firearms were sold in your state:

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced late Saturday the federal government will hit back against the U.S. after President Donald Trump launched a trade war this weekend with punitive tariffs on all Canadian goods.

From a journalist friend: Just spreading the word. The CDC is purging data, so people should archive their favorite CDC datasets today, namely ones around race/ethnic diversity, LGBTQ, and reproductive health. Also health data involving climate. The youth risk behavior survey has already gone down.

Should cities spend $$$ on police or social services if reducing crime is the goal? I summarize the research on this question in this now-un-paywalled article. www.annualreviews.org/content/jour...

Can confirm

Excellent meta-points about (1) the lack of data and (2) the appalling state of things given the little data we have.

Good collection of studies analyzing the effects of reduced prosecution and bail. Spoiler: The US is prosecuting and jailing too many people.

“Over 5.6 million *unique* individuals are booked into jail annually.” Jails are the main type of incarceration people experience. Way more than prisons. Mostly pretrial detention.

NEW: We asked our readers to send us questions on how pregnancy is being policed, surveilled, and criminalized in the United States. You delivered—and an expert on the topic answered you! I learned a ton myself, I think you will too: boltsmag.org/how-pregnanc...
