Very flattering - didn't even realise he had an academia.edu account

One for all the epigraphers out there: late thirteenth century #Armenian bishop and historian, Stepanos Orbelean, complaining about the poor preservation of an inscription he was using (and largely recorded verbatim) in his history. Stepanos, babe, I feel you. #Medievalsky

Jairus Banaji slaps once more - what should be another nail in the coffin of Brennerism/Political #Marxism, but sadly that satisfying story remains a useful origin myth for #Marxist intellectuals and organisers unengaged with history (understandably!). www.historicalmaterialism.org/article/reto...

Mind currently whirring at the fact that, of all the legal traditions in medieval Afro-Eurasia, only East Roman (Byzantine) law recognised interest without condemnation or mystification. The longest chapter - by some distance - in the 11th c. casebook known as the Peira is on debt & interest.

Excited to announce I'll be editor for a new series at @archumanities.bsky.social, The Afro-Eurasian Middle Ages, presenting 'the integrated study of the Afro-Eurasian “Old World”, in its formative millennium'. Share widely, & get in touch if you have ideas! www.arc-humanities.org/the-afro-eur...

"Anti-migrant politics will not build a single house, staff a single hospital or raise anyone’s wages. Instead, by echoing its rhetoric, the government is simply fuelling the rise of Reform UK" Well done to these Labour MPs, trade unionists, and members. www.theguardian.com/politics/202...

“We hereby declare that we are free and want to remain free.” Exactly 500 years ago today, peasants from 25 German villages Germany rose up against the nobility in one of the most significant uprisings of the German Peasants’ War. Their demands formed the basis of the “Twelve Articles”, a list...1/3

Crucial publication clarifying some misunderstandings among those of us new to medical history, and ultimately arguing for caution in foreclosing any argument about the chronology and geography of plague's spread given the pace of change in the science - read and share widely! #medievalsky

Unison is the largest women’s organization in the UK. It has a million women members. The Unison women’s conference just voted for a motion that said; “trans women are women and trans men are men” with no-one speaking against it. Transphobia is a top-down, elite practice.

Great news! Well done to the student organisers in Edinburgh and across the UK. Arms companies have no place on campus any time, let alone in the midst of genocide profiteering. thetab.com/2025/02/10/d...

Very excited that this article is finally out! I hope it'll be of interest to anyone who: 1) is interested in the history of #nationhood & #nationalism; 2) is into the debate over Romanness in "#Byzantium"; & 3) wants to develop critical #Marxist frameworks before & after capitalism. A short 🧵/1

He says Elsa, I say Malik Shah 😅

Excited to speak in this wonderful seminar next Monday, 5.15pm UK time - and it's hybrid so you can all join too! Follow the link for details, and my title is: 'Crisis of Accumulation in the Chinggisid World-Order: Land, Capital & Fiscal Administration in Ilkhanid Ani, 1256-1335' shorturl.at/kc1GB

My father, the medieval historian Bob (R.I.) Moore, died peacefully this morning after a long and increasingly-not-fun battle with cancer.

Very sad. I spent the end of last year reading Moore's lesser read pieces of comparative, and integrated, global medieval history. A true pioneer that linked the current Global Middle Ages & late-20th c. world history, and to my mind unsurpassed by any current paradigm for global history c.500-1500.

Bringing out the big guns for an article I'll be writing over the next couple of weeks 🚩

Applications for our 2025-27 ECR Fellowships @ihr.bsky.social close on 31 Jan 2025 For full details and how to apply see below: www.history.ac.uk/fellowships/...

Our friends at Notes from Below have just launched 'Workers' Inquiry', a new podcast series about work, struggle and revolution. Each episode, contributors to NfB share their experience of work, their analysis of their workplace, and how they think we can build our collective power as a class.

Feeling the responsibility as a Marxist global medieval historian to grasp the 'techno/neo-feudalism' nettle - my current thoughts are "new regime of accumulation", rather than "new-old" mode of production, but ready to be convinced. Varoufakis and Joel Kotkin on the list, what else should I read?

My Emotional Support Dead Famous Guy does in fact say a lot about me —

East Anglia is distressingly flat

Google has outdone itself for ironic misidentification: Jairus Banaji, lifelong Marxist theorist and revolutionary socialist, groundbreaking historian of "merchant" capitalism, has become simply a "merchant" 😂

If you're interested in reading about Sophene's crucial project, and another important Armenian source on the Mongol era, you can read my review of the translation of Kirakos Gandzaketsi in the latest issue of @wasafirimag.bsky.social, 'Armenia(n)/s', here: www.academia.edu/125831990/RE...

Great to see Sophene's beautiful dual language series getting some promotion! A small, independent press producing volumes up there with Harvarf's Loeb and Dumbarton Oaks series.

Happy new year, all! Now that I'm back at work I'm hyped to realize that our edited volume on Lordship and the Decentralized State will be coming out in less than 3 weeks! This gives me just enough time to share the things I'm most excited about with this project... global.oup.com/academic/pro...
