The picture of an egalitarian moral philosophy based on examples from the working trades, reminded me of Ross Harrison’s comment that the writing in Bentham’s ‘Deontology’ resembled “instructions about how one should fasten up a cylinder head without cracking it”.

We've created a new Starter Pack of #History institutes and research centres in the UK & Ireland bit.ly/3F3Eo2M Please do share. There will be gaps and recommendations are welcome. We hope this pack helps you keep in touch with work by and for historians in the UK & Ireland #Skystorians.

Today on #HoPWaG we start to cover the original consequentialists, who beat Mill and Bentham to this ethical theory by about two millennia: the Mohists! www.historyofphilosophy.net/mohist-philo... #philsky #mohism #chinesephilosophy #podcasts

Tomorrow on #HoPWaG we kick off a mini-series on the Mohists, the ancient Chinese school who were the first ever consequentialists.

Actually this may be a record (pun intended): I recorded FOUR episodes today, this one on Descartes, an interview with Howard Hotson on the Republic of Letters, and two episodes about Mohism. Time to pack my mic away and give it a rest!

Just recorded the first podcast episode on René Descartes! It will air on March 30. Followed by a whole bunch of episodes, on his physics, skepticism, the immediate reception of the Meditations, his correspondence with Elizabeth, his ethics, etc. Mind you, I still have to write all of these!

"I believe with a Calvinistic uncompromisingness that one cannot be too hard on the stupidities of one's neighbours." - Wyndham Lewis (I don't agree with this but enjoyed the quote)

I figured that I should get this joke out of the way early rather than letting everyone wait for it.

Letter themed morning: lovely to hear Dorothy Moore and the Hartlib Circle feature in this intro to early modern philosophy emphasising its international nature, sometimes obscured. More on Moore: www.irishphilosophy.com/2016/01/21/d...

The best thing is the list of philosophers in the keywords section.

We start digging into early modern philosophy in earnest on today's new #HoPWaG episode, on the "Republic of Letters" in the 17-18th centuries. Figures in focus include Mersenne, Peiresc, Leibniz, Calvet, and Hartlib. www.historyofphilosophy.net/republic-of-... #philsky #podcasts #leibniz

Review of my brilliant brother Glenn Adamson's new book, "A Century of Tomorrows: How Imagining the Future Shapes the Present," in the New York Review of Books: www.nybooks.com/articles/202... #futurology #nyrb

Coming up tomorrow on #HoPWaG, we start to dig into early modern philosophy by considering the pan-European phenomenon of the "Republic of Letters," focusing on figures including Mersenne, Leibniz, Pereisc, and Calvet. Will be up early Sunday morning for your listening pleasure! #philsky #podcasts

I cannot stop looking at this illustration of Socrates and his students. Al-Mubashir, Turkish School, 13th century: aeon.co/ideas/arabic...

Don't miss this week's new episode, in which Amy Olberding discussed Confucian ethics, in an interview centering on the idea that etiquette and rudeness are fundamental moral concepts: www.historyofphilosophy.net/confucian-et... #confucianism #philsky #podcasts #hopwag

🤯

Just finished the draft script for the first podcast episode on Descartes! So excited to be writing about him after almost 15 years of podcasting, it sometimes seemed I would never get this far.

Oxford University would like to hire a specialist in ancient philosophy, and are interested in people who can also cover Islamic or Indian philosophy: www.philosophy.ox.ac.uk/academic-vac...

Highly recommend this podcast for all history and philosophy fans. History of Philosophy Without Any Gaps @histphilosophy.bsky.social does an incredible job taking listeners through the history of philosophy, “without any gaps”. True passion and dedication - 15 years and almost 500 episodes!

Veṅkaṭanātha starts his commentary on the Śaraṇāgatigadya with about 2pp (pp. 97—98 in the Granthamālā ed.) on the text in its entirety and on its temporal division (what has happened already, before the uttering of the text, what is happening while uttering the text & what will happen after it?) 1

Tomorrow we wrap up our coverage of #Confucianism on #HoPWaG, with an interview featuring Amy Olberding! She tells us why she translates "li" as "etiquette" and why rudeness and politeness are surprisingly deep ethical concepts.
