Voted! And volunteered for vote scrutineering this evening. Partly because of boring civic views on how society works only because sometimes individuals do a bunch of things that are boring but have to get done. And partly because it sounds like scrutiny+mutineering. Steampunk science vote counting

Flying, I noticed a major shift from years past: a lot of men projecting a kind of aggro macho image, in the past would've never done a voluntary biometrics scan. The attitude used to be, Just try and make me, govt. If there was a right to refuse, they would've. And now they performatively comply.

Great discussions so far at the Res Philosophica Pragmatism and Scientific Inquiry conference. And this room! #philsci

General psa/temperature check. The vibe at the YVR airport US customs was verrryyyy different this morning than it has been in recent travel through there, including just last week. First time at YVR I have ever been in that back room there for extra checking

Given our location, Simon Fraser Philosophy has a great opportunity to do *something* to mitigate impacts from US politics on colleagues in the field, grad students, etc, by funding more students, rounding up postdoc or visiting faculty lines if we can, holding events here. But one issue ... #philsky

The Cambridge book table was 👍 this APA. Got both these, total cost $14USD. I've read the Chang book electronically but still prefer to read paper. And I did not even realize Khalidi's book was out! The start of the summer reading pile #philsci #philsky

I got to spent seven straight hours yesterday talking with people about William James (and Hodgson, and Lewes, etc). Pacific APA had a lot of great discussions #philsky

William James on automaton theory: "As in the night all cats are gray, so in the darkness of metaphysical criticism all causes are obscure."

Still life in printing room. After a lot of discussion, we are still going to the P-APA. 2 (of 4) travellers in our party may have trouble at the border, for different reasons. Main deciding factor is that we cross at the airport, on Canadian soil. This is not professionally sustainable #philsky

Canada is so serious about keeping away those HFCS midwest superheroes that SFU has started growing kryptonite

There is a split showing up wrt piracy and LibGen. Academic scholars seem to think it is Obviously Awesome piracy for good, we get no royalties anyway but now people can access our work. And writers like novelists find it bad piracy, they live off royalties, it makes their work harder to do #philsky

I usually recommend to people going to Pitt for the first time that they go to the front of the Cathedral of Learning, up those stairs by the lion head, and then through the revolving doors to get the full "they weren't joking about the Cathedral" effect. #philsky #philsci

I just got such a lovely present from a student: my own embosser! I have a lending library of philosophical scifi/fantasy, usually just write my name inside the cover. Now I can emboss IT IS VERY SATISFYING And has a theme in the middle from a book we read in class, A Psalm for the Wildbuilt.

I have seen a lot of deer around here and none of them are sporting a rack like that. I think the deer paid off the designer. And maybe to have the crows left off, too. Doing the crows wrong to put a pigeon there. The seagulls would also like a word. #SFU

An insightful and thorough review of our edited volume. Thanks, @thehangedman.com I also agree with the point about needing to bring values, in addition to metaphysics and epistemology, into pragmatist phil of science. #philsci #philsky
