It was reported this week that British special forces officers vetoed asylum for their Afghan colleagues, because those soldiers had seen them commit war crimes against civilians and might be called to testify against them in court. As far as I can see, nobody who matters even blinked.

Wow, I didn't realise Corbyn had been appointed Secretary of State for Defence/Foreign Secretary and Prime Minister.

Blaming left wing people for rising fascism instead of the so-called centrists who destroyed any chance of progressive government and have now adopted far right policies about trans people, immigration and disabled people in particular is frankly a huge LOL Luke. Embarrassed for you.

As a left-wing person who long reconciled himself with the reality that my politics are marginal and will likely remain so forever (and that I personally am not a terribly convincing advocate for them), I'm struck by how often the mere existence of my politics is treated like a major social problem

We looked into the rise of the far right and it turns out, it’s all because of like eight percent of the population that everyone who has been in power for 45 years of escalating cruelty and disaster hates, as do all of their hangers-on. I know, remarkable isn’t it? And so helpfully convenient, too.

"Knowing what we know now" is just code for "Keir Starmer and the other radicalised people in the cabinet have told us to change our policy"

How we created a media/SM environment that for twenty years drove every well-intentioned and talented person away from politics, then gave transparently bad actors a total pass when they started destroying the system, is going to be important to reflect on if we survive this moment.

I agree, but attempts to reimpose this will founder the moment they bump up against things like e.g. opinion and editorial writers at the Times have been reheating some of the spicier sections of Mein Kampf for well over ten years, and those people will all unite in fury against “Cancel Culture”.

Is there any clearer example of the commercial property investor class’ grip on the media than constant articles criticising working from home

it has been said before but one problem is that when some people say 'the economy' they're talking about poor people affording food and housing, & when some other people say 'the economy' they're referring to a chart of how happy rich people are

the left can accurately be defined as people who have made fun of me online. here’s why they’re responsible for everything going wrong

You know what’s funny is that after today’s display, after their stupid Borders Bill & all their posturing, Labour are going to do horribly in the local elections. And then they’re going to take from that they need to do even more of the same.

I don't support any particular political party, but this is very much how I feel. It isn't just hostile immigration policies, it's anti-trans legislation, targeting disabled etc. It's a whole raft of things which make me feel that we have just switched "performative cruelty" for "competent cruelty".

The perfect encapsulation of the whole project here: they wanted to create a crushing new electoral bloc of real people whose views actually matter - Reasonable Tories, yuppie suburbanites, racist pensioners - so they could look everyone else in the eye and say “LOL absolutely *fuck you*”.

Too late, too late: obviously this is right but I’m afraid we are getting crackdowns, cruelty, racism and roaring drivel about gender insanity in the NHS, because the people at the top of Labour will gladly suicide bomb themselves just to spite these groups. Again.

The PolProfs are way too late here: their heroes long since established, reasserted and underlined that this is hatefully extreme communism and possibly treason, and they will now drive the whole country into the sea again rather than concede an inch on that or anything else

I appreciate that everything about this - headline, premise, content, author name and photo - looks like an Onion-level satirical gag.

I think a lot about the collapse of “democratic” systems where the left or their equivalents were crushed and hounded out of participation and how temporary those victories for conservatives forces were because insulating yourself from reality only works to a certain point if everyone loathes you.

I keep saying this. You can get the net migration figures down, increase violent deportations and do press releases, treat people seeking asylum more abominably, and Nigel Farage’s fans will still be fuming because they saw two Muslim women on the bus. They want ETHNIC CLEANSING.

The people currently running our government spent five years bitterly fighting to ensure that a Labour government would absolutely choose to "crack down on sick pay" over helping the vulnerable, unhoused, etc.
