Listening this evening to: podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/w... Sandel has a great clarity in speaking that is helpful for thinking through issues, even if one might land in a different position or perspective. Recommend this episode as a useful framing exercise.

Some local art joy - downtown favorite art supply store is having their annual repaint the murals block party

John Cassani, Calusa Waterkeeper emeritus, writes that Florida’s posture toward protecting coastal waters has shifted over the past 20-plus years: "The resulting water quality decline, seagrass loss, algal blooms and economic impacts have been well documented." www.theinvadingsea.c...

Poet in Residence wanted for the National Memorial Arboretum for two years to use the Arboretum's landscape and memorials for a series of original poems to share stories with brand new audiences. Details in link. Please share :) www.thenma.org.uk/about-us/wor...

Absurd and unconscionable. My parents live just downstream from one of these dots and my aunt is near another. Will we ever leave the 19th c approach to natural resources behind?!

Nice thing about this cabinet is that it’s a cure for imposter syndrome. If you ever think “I’m not qualified to do that” there’s always someone say, running public health, who’s even less qualified.

New. Fifa has been laundering its reputation through partnerships with UN bodies. WHO and UNHCR are declining to disclose the amount they are receiving from the fund meant to provide remedies to migrant workers. By @samindrakunti.bsky.social josimarfootball.com/2025/02/12/b...

Well framed. (And timely as for the second time in a year colleagues from other departments expect me to approve proposals for a new philosophy course “on AI ethics” without engaging much ethics or philosophy in the course outcomes.)

If you’re feeling that extra intensity in the air today, yes, it is a full moon.

Hmm… feel foisted back to 90s grad school arguments with this tbh. Butler v Fish on gender, academia & culture: www.ncf.edu/socraticstage/

I drive past one of these sites on the way to my parents'. An unnerving landscape.

Spring calling! 🌿 Large, busy flock of robins partying in the neighbors’ trees woke the whole block up this morning. #MorningWalk

My nervous system is on *high* alert, so sharing 2 things I shared with my Humanities students. We're studying landscape art& I was trying to emphasize how human the call to connect with/make art about landscapes is even in our digital age. An absolute pleasure to speak with you and your students last week @hollym.bsky.social. Thank you for engaging Govt Girl. 2025 marks 15 years since publication. So much has changed. So much has stayed the same!

Recommendation - for women’s studies & US history/politics profs: the last couple weeks one of my classes has been reading @stacyparkerlemelle.bsky.social ‘s memoir Government Girl: Young & Female in the White House about her time as WH intern and staffer during the Clinton administration. /1

Love seeing the timeline appreciate Tampa and Doechii's #Grammy (And I see some of the doubters' comments, too - as with all of Florida, I wish more people could experience the Florida residents know, and play a huge role in creating.)

Awful news from Cardiff, solidarity to staff facing this terrible decision. Languages at Cardiff has always been at the forefront of our field, particularly their mentoring programme to support MFL uptake in schools. And the irony of proposing a School of Global Humanities without Modern Languages

Getting an Italian language feed in my usually English #SerieA viewing app this morning. Makes for a nice change (and test).

BREAKING: We filed a federal lawsuit challenging a Florida law that curtails academic freedom by imposing restrictions on university programs and discussions related to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Allowing online submissions of handwritten biweekly “study notebook” pages - basically practice analysis/research prompts I give in lieu of quizzes. Several students actually seemed excited to use their notebooks! We’ll see how it goes; trying different things to roll back tech load &AI temptations

Read similar recently about steep decline in production last 5+ years. A bit heartbreaking to say the least. Anecdotally I saw "California orange" trees for sale in a local nursery; I know it's a hybrid strain, but felt like a loss decades in the making. As for what's on grocery shelves....

Aware I’m carrying a fair amount of professional grief as I start the term…but just to say, despite state efforts, my Intro to Women’s Studies had more students than seats for our first meeting this week. A very diverse group in all ways too.

A wonderful story - and a reminder to always speak with museum security guards.
