thinking of one of abraham lincoln's great quotes this morning: "As I would not be a slave, so I would not be a master. This expresses my idea of democracy. Whatever differs from this, to the extent of the difference, is no democracy."

New Yorkers and DC residents trying to talk with @schumer.senate.gov are having to push notes through a locked door with police posted outside.

Celebrating International Women's day with a nod to some of my favorite women: Agatha Christie & Ngaio Marsh; Elizabeth Peters; Sara Paretsky & the beautiful Margaret Maron.

If one guy holds most of the tech people rely on, it is a vulnerability, but also it's one guy: as a global population we should be able to easily just take it from him, so it seems to me the real vulnerability is an internalized belief that private ownership is more sacrosanct than human thriving.

CELEBRATING BLACK HISTORY MONTH & AFRICAN AMERICAN MYSTERY WRITERS: Delia Pitts devoured classic mystery fiction as a child, then worked as a journalist, diplomat and university administrator before turning to fiction. TROUBLE IN QUEENSTOWN was published in 2024, with DEATH OF AN EX due in July.

In very Duluth news: Today I learned that the Minnesota Star Tribune's style is "Uff da," not "uffdah." This is exactly the kind of thing that lights up my brain.

AOC has them sputtering mad because she’s educating people on constitutional rights. You don’t see them freaking out at Jeffries for talking about egg prices.

If the president can ignore court orders and illegally circumvent, Congress, there is no Constitution. It’s gone. There’s no enumerated right that the president can’t take from you, no law Congress can pass that is binding, and no court that can protect you from any of it. It’s the whole ballgame.

CELEBRATING BLACK HISTORY MONTH & AFRICAN AMERICAN MYSTERY WRTERS: Hugh Holton (1947-2001) was on the Chicago police force and turned to crime writing in mid life, penning 10 novels before his death, the first one, PRESUMED DEAD, published in 1994. The MWA annually presents the Hugh Holton Award.

CELEBRATING BLACK HISTORY MONTH & AFRICAN AMERICAN MYSTERY WRITERS: A former editor at Essence Magazine, Valerie Wilson Wesley launched a mystery series featuring former policewoman Tamara Hale in 1994 with WHEN DEATH COMES STEALING. There are 8 books in the series.

Ever wonder what snow in the swamp would look like? This is 5 miles into the Louisiana swamps in the Atchafalaya basin... it's unreal... having lived down there for the first 28 years of my life, we never saw anything like this. Smashed records. Curtesy of Garrett Roberts.

All these women who turned in January 6 terrorists are in danger tonight

The video evidence is what I always come back to when I think of Jan. 6. We @propublica.org created this interactive piece of videos that Parler users recorded and uploaded from their own POV that day, and it remains as disturbing today as it was then. projects.propublica.org/parler-capit...

This is murder the same as if, to give a totally unrelated example, they had pulled out a gun and shot the patients dead in the streets.

president tries to seize power in south korea? significant resistance. president tries to seize power in brazil? president is arrested and banned from running again. president tries to seize power in america? the courts grant him total immunity and the voters reelect him with an allied congress

the frenzy over the hunter biden pardon is a good reminder that the press knows how to make something a scandal and has decided that nothing trump does is truly deserving of that treatment

Did anyone else's backyard #birds get them through last week? Are you the Dove or the Junco?🪶 (Hey Bluesky, I'm over here clutching my little wad of Earth, fleeing Facebook instead of Twitter. I'll try to serve up a weekly birb, beeb, or borb and maybe some other stuff)

The vampire can't get into your house unless you invite him. His offer to debate you about this situation is his first step across the threshold. We should probably keep this in mind.

Trump told members of the Detroit Economic Club as he painted a picture of what his opponent would do to America. “It’ll be like Detroit. Our whole country will end up being like Detroit if she’s your president. You’re going to have a mess on your hands.” www.freep.com/story/news/p...

The only way to stop a bad guy from eating a goose is with a good guy threatening to murder every elementary school student in town.

The editor in chief of the National Review just said the N word in regards to Haitians and Megyn Kelly ignores it.
