A good friend of mine is hiking up a mountain without the aid of technology in order to raise money for the homeless. Would you mind chipping in? Thanks! www.justgiving.com/page/isaac-p...

Have you ever run a Python script with your hands clasped in prayer? I’m not a religious man, but that’s exactly what I just did. Not sure my mental health can take any more errors today?

I’ve been using some ray tracing software at work to automate the modelling of a microwave transmission system. Some of the images it produces are spectacular, like some abstract work of art.

Ever since I had a hernia repair operation 6 weeks ago, I’ve been farting almost uncontrollably. Really big, smelly farts. I’ve been mostly at home resting in this time, luckily. I hope it dies down soon or I may never be able to go to a public place again. Certainly not the office.

Structure #1 in my 30 Brutalist structures in 2025: Tŷ Pont Haearn in Cardiff, Wales. Built in 2005 so a bit late to strictly be part of the Brutalist architectural movement. However, it uses many construction methods commonly used in the architectural style. Now a student accommodation building.

I’ve made a realisation about myself in the past few days: I have really low confidence in myself and my abilities. A fear of failure really holds me back and seems to be why I spend a lot of time procrastinating. This must be why my work actually improves sometimes when I’ve been drinking

China appears set to become the world's first clean tech hegemon, their global influence & domestic economy secured through a network of minerals, batteries, EVs, solar, wind & nuclear production & exports. Meanwhile, the US under Trump tries to hang on to its role as 20th century petro-hegemon. 🔌💡

About a year ago I fell out with a bunch of people on here who were all Elon Musk simps. Have lost touch with most of them, but I wonder if they are still worshiping that clown.

My New Year’s resolution is to visit 30 brutalist structures. Any care to recommend any I should stick on my list. I don’t know where I’m visiting this year (if anywhere) so probably most of them will be in the UK or maybe Europe.

A large part of the human endeavour involves trying to predict the future. From the soothsayers and oracles of old, to modern day science, statistical modelling and even AI, they all aim to tell us what’s going to happen at some point in the future.

Tiktok has been banned in the US on the grounds that China could use it "to manipulate and control Americans by spreading propaganda and misinformation." In other words, China *might* do exactly what Elon Musk *has done* with X. It's a blatant double standard.

Q: What sound did cows make in Ancient Greece? A: μ

Vaccines are among the best of inventions. There's a high chance that without them, and the herd immunity they can deliver, you'd either not be here or would face a lifelong disability: *whether or not you had them yourself*. It seems crazy to have to point this out, but we forget it at our peril.

In my final year of my PhD, I found a todo list from a day in my first few months. The thing I had planned for between 10am and 11am ended up taking me 3 whole months. The task I planned to work on between 3pm and 4pm hadn’t even been started. Anyone else very optimistic about their time management?

I have a new paper in Dialogues on Climate Change exploring climate outcomes under current policies. I find that we are likely headed toward 2.7C by 2100 (with uncertainties from 1.9C to 3.7C), and that high end emissions scenarios have become much less likely. journals.sagepub.com...

I want to learn a language this year. Should I learn: 1. Spainish 2. Welsh

It’s really not surprising that people are switching to AI chatbots from traditional websites and social media. The latter has taken a real nosedive in quality over the past few years. News sites in particular are full of clickbait rubbish and misinformation.
