Excellent photo essay from Alessandro Gandolfi in today's @theguardian.com from Italy's Phlegraean Fields (Campi Flegrei), where ground movements, seismic swarms, and fumaroles are a part of life at a restless, active #volcano www.theguardian.com/artanddesign...

Fun and sunny field day looking at the Falls Foot #landslide in North Yorkshire, as our students prepare to write a technical report on its characteristics and likely triggers. Another great field site close to #Lancaster university!

Congratulations to Montserratian @lancasteruni.bsky.social PhD student TiVonne Howe for publishing her first paper, on magmatic CO2 and storage depths at her volcano: Soufriere Hills, Montserrat. New insights into the depth of magma storage and CO2 systematics: www.frontiersin.org/journals/ear...

The #LancasterUniversity educational philosophy states that "Education is at the heart of global change for the better". I'm proud of our graduating students brave enough to unfurl banners calling for an end to genocide, and to question ongoing University association with BAE systems, who arm it 👏🏼

So good to see some of our graduating #volcanology #masters students at today's #LancasterUniversity graduation ceremony. Exciting plans for the future and a proud director of studies in the picture 👏🏼

So great to see some of our graduating #volcanology #Masters students at today's #Lancaster University graduation ceremony. We'll keep in touch, and there are many exciting plans for the future!

Excited to get a sneak preview of the spectacular textures in samples of lava and pumice from the ~877AD Hrafntinnuhraun eruption, #Iceland, from David Zhang (LEC PhD student). Rhyolite-basalt magma mixing, sintering, fracture and healing, and more...

Great atmosphere in the Gregson Centre last night... here's a snippet of bluegrass from Mr Saturday Night. Thanks to everyone who played and who came...we raised loads of money for charity!

We had Toba volcano on trial today as part of an atmospheric science module, accused of almost wiping out our species. Prosecution: Rampino & Ambrose 2000 tinyurl.com/rampinoambrose Defence: Lane et al 2013 doi.org/10.1073/pnas.1301474110 Students inspired to see established thinking challenged!

Great audience in the Lancaster Environment Centre for Joe Roman (joeroman.com) explaining role of birds and seals in fertilizing the new volcanic island of Surtsey, and plugging his book Eat Poop Die. @lec-reefs.bsky.social

We're proud to offer the UK's first & only taught #Volcanology Master's here at Lancaster University. Our alumni go on to great things in academia & industry: look at @mikevolc.bsky.social & @grumpyvolcano.bsky.social! Applications open via tinyurl.com/lancsvolc & video here: youtu.be/I40_31sLLiI

Here in the #Lancaster Environment Centre we're proud to offer the only UK Master's degree in #politicalecology, taught by @kaiheron.bsky.social & colleagues. For more info watch this video: youtu.be/jKsEQCKTjRg?... and check out our MA Political Ecology page: www.lancaster.ac.uk/study/postgr...

New study from @fabianwadsworth.bsky.social and team examines how crystal-rich magmas deform: a combination of viscous flow and fracture on different spatial scales. Especially relevant to lava dome emplacement. Bravo!

Just finished In Ascension by Martin MacInnes: tinyurl.com/inascension. What a remarkable piece of writing...weaving together #ecology, #technology, #climate catastrophe, and the (dis)connect between humans and #nature, and humans and each other. A must-read for all social and physical scientists!

As COP29 draws to close, our research briefing highlights the breadth of BGS research and datasets available to support building resilience to geohazards under future climate change scenarios. www.bgs.ac.uk/about-bgs/se...

A pleasure to read the classic Magnús Tumí Gudmundsson paper on volcano-ice interaction in the 1996 Gjálp eruption (www.nature.com/articles/40122) with our #glaciology students. Head twister: warm meltwater drained uphill beneath Vatnajökull! Pic: Magnús, me, Hannah Reynolds (ex-LEC Volcanology MSc)

Our new MSc #DataScience with Biodiversity Pathway is now up on the LEC webpages www.lancaster.ac.uk/lec/graduate... Run through @dsilu.bsky.social

It's not too early to reflect how the outline of lava flow fields in any future geological maps will record how public money protected the profits of a private company #anthropocene #capitalism #volcanology @andrimagnason.bsky.social

Lava flowing over the Blue Lagoon car park

I'm sorry but 1.5c is dead. It's over. Climate politics today is about mitigating runaway heating and ecological decline, while those with the levers of power -states and capital- push on the accelerator. This is why we must build new forms of popular power. www.project-syndicate.org/commentary/a...

Hi as 🦋 newbie: I'm a #volcanologist & environmental scientist at Lancaster Environment Centre (UK). My research: volcanic conduit processes, rhyolitic eruptions, and #magma #degassing, also increasingly #soils and #microplastics. Directed only taught #volcanology Masters in UK: tinyurl.com/MScVandE

Calling all Lancastrians...come along to the Greggy on Friday December 6th to help me and Damon Kilcawley celebrate our birthdays with a festive fundraising party! Folk, klezmer, bluegrass and Morecambe Bay Americana from Balkanics, Mr Saturday Night, and Ruth Eliza...

Hello bluesky community! I'm fleeing from the fanatical billionaire fascism of Musk. It's great to see many friends and colleagues on here already. Any tips for volcanology/environment accounts to follow would be much appreciated.
