My take on the current games media kerfuffle: 1) Games media is like 10 overworked people now 2) While the landscape has changed, you can still get press to talk about your non-mainstream game, you just have to present them with a good angle. 3) games media does not materially affect sales anymore

It's willingly ignorant to assign blame for AAA games studios being shuttered at anything other than corporate mismanagement and incompetence from an avaricious executive class. This is an industry where corporate suits saw monkey jpegs and thought "Yes, this is the future of gaming!"

AAA is fucked. AAAA is fucked. AA is fucked. Indie is fucked. It's all fucked. I've never seen more across-the-board devastation in this industry in the decade-and-a-half I've been here.

Yall, I have been building a studio for three years now and there will never be harder work. And never mind the amount of work, I literally live in the red. I have to scrimp every penny. You think I can afford WORKERS? Shit. Studios are great dreams. BUT BEST OF LUCK, US FUCKIN POORS

Indies will not save us until y'all start demanding Valve take a smaller cut of revenue from them. Because that 30% cut is responsible for more indie studios folding after their 1st game than anything else in this industry

I get really irked when I see people post “indies will save us” or “the laid off devs should go indie” THERE IS NO MONEY publishers are cancelling contracts, angel investors/venture capital don’t want small returns. I think they mean hobbyists with a day job working doubletime & that is a rough ask

i work in an incubator space that's kept open through an educational subsidy, and the games being made there rely on government funding and nearly everyone working other jobs. everything is hanging by a thread.

The process of talented people coming together is fragile and difficult. I can’t overstate how much time it takes to build the trust, processes, and institutional knowledge necessary to make large creative works as a team. To blow that up wholesale is just such a heartbreaking, catastrophic waste.

we have enough good games AAA employees should go to work, put in minimal effort to get paid, and then go home and be happy with all that time and energy you saved because you’re just going to get fired anyways so you might as well make a bad game and take the CEOs down with you

its joever, adidas is selling latex now, its gonna be all downhill from now

Reminds me when Namco copyrighted playing mini games during loading screens, ensuring only Ridge Racer ever did that. Now that the copyrighted was overturned, it's too late to do anything with it because loading screens have been mostly eliminated

All of these layoffs are evil and stupid and grotesque and it constantly feels like the list of options we have available is dwindling by the day.

I am heartbroken. We were making something so beautiful, y'all. I'm out of a job and I'm having a baby in ten weeks. I'm terrified.

This games industry bloodbath is because of corporate mismanagement and pure, unrestrained avarice. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

how many people currently trying to find jobs in the gaming industry have to go to prospective employers like 'yeah I can't tell you what I spent the last SIX FUCKING YEARS working on cause it was never formally announced and was then canceled'

A year from now these same companies will be pouring money into new studios and struggling to recruit the expertise they need to make the projects they have to make because the knowledge was institutional.

Actually care about the UX/UI of the thing you're building. And that includes accessibility.

If you run or manage a FOSS project, I'd love to chat. Specifically, I'm interested in how you approach large-scale organisation. How do you maintain code quality & consistency? How do you attract new contributors? etc. If interested, please contact me: [email protected]

Happy Twin Peaks Day 🦉

I thought controversy was due to the problematic representation of gay men as psycho killers. Didn't realise how much deeper it went in terms of the story behind the making of the film, the real life murders that inspired it and the disparity of government overreach for the film vs the victims.

This was such a good video. I found the section on accurately preserving a visual historical record while telling an ahistoric version of events really interesting.

The Cuff very kindly let me shoot my latest video at their bar! It's about the movie CRUISING and the long history of gay bars, leather, and conflicts with the police. Watch here: https://buff.ly/3QsIvYZ

This might sound random but if you’ve been following HK since 2014, this actually makes perfect sense

Watching Trump talk about Ukraine is the first time I've seen a country outside of Palestine be Palestine'd this much. The US speaks highly of the aggressor, blames the victim for resisting aggression, and pretends "peace" is an option under continued occupation. It's years not decades, but still.

guys, it's working. starve these leeches of content 🤗

bluesky randos are the funniest people ever. theyre not even internet weirdos theyre just comically normal dudes. real life simulator

Imagine being a government (especially a Labour government) that has this many amazing artists against you. Utterly shameful behaviour from Keir Starmer. www.theguardian.com/technology/2...
