I am outraged by the unjust arrest of Newark Mayor Ras Baraka earlier this afternoon outside of Delaney Hall in Newark. I am calling for his immediate release by federal law enforcement.

Librarian of Congress Carla Hayden, the first Black American and woman to lead the institution, was fired last night by Pres. Trump. The trailblazer has long fought for equity in access and against book bans. She previously led the Pratt Library for 23 years.

Destroying the agency that brought us the internet, the SuperCollider and modern telescopes. Heading into the dark ages here

Trump has apparently fired Carla Hayden, trailblazing public servant led Baltimore's Pratt Library for 23 yrs before being named Librarian of Congress by Obama— first Black American and woman to hold the position. Spoke to her days ago. From Jan. 2023: www.baltimoremagazine.com/section/hist...

She came here as a toddler, and would have been eligible for DACA if the program was not ended. Now she is in ICE detention because she took a right turn on a red light. Her father is in the same detention center, arrested for a traffic violation two weeks prior. newschannel9.com/news/local/f...

O's "young" roster—Rutschman, 27, .216 BA; Westburg, 26, .217 BA; Mountcastle, 28, .202 BA; Kjerstand, 26, .205 BA; Cowser, 25, .125 BA (four games, injured). Great talent—Gunnar is the only superstar—expresses itself earlier. See Machado, Cal, Eddie, Palmer, Boog, Brooks. Holliday, we'll know soon.

my feelings about the military notwithstanding, this is a) very very bad precedent and b) exactly what i expected

Advance copies of POLICE AGAINST THE MOVEMENT are making it out in the world. The book retells the civil rights struggle of the ‘60s through its overlooked work against police violence—and the surveillance, infiltration and legal repression activists endured in return. Pub date is 10/07!

I say this a lot, but it's riding my bike that made me not see Baltimore as a scary place anymore.

With alt text. Would have been better to just say nothing.

Even *if* you accept Stephen Miller’s (textually, historically, and morally indefensible) claim that undocumented immigrants are not entitled to due process, you’d *still* need due process to ensure that the individuals at issue are, in fact, undocumented. His argument fails even on its own terms.

How much will they pay U.S. citizens?

Massive congratulations to The Baltimore Banner. What they’ve accomplished in three years, in terms of building their newsroom and the quality of journalism they produce, is nothing short of incredible. The Banner has supplanted the 187-year old Sun as the daily record of this city.

With a new prime-time cable show launching tonight, former Lt. Gov. Michael Steele discusses the current Maryland and national politics.

It will never cease to amaze me that this level of unsubtle dishonesty, such explicitly self-serving rhetoric has managed to convince so many people.

Unironically the best public art event Baltimore has every year.

Happening now: The American Visionary Art Museum’s annual, all-day Kinetic Sculpture Race reaches Patterson Park and the “sand pit” obstacle. Some city. Some fun. #Baltimore

Donald Trump just posted a photo of himself as the Pope. It's full-on lunacy at this point.

The Public Broadcasting Act of 1967 created the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. I reread it today; nothing in the law allows a president to defund PBS and NPR. In fact, Congress specifically sought to insulate public media from political pressure.

The Washington Post and Democracy Docket have different ideas of what opinions to publish and promote. Support media outlets that share your values. hubs.ly/Q03jcjqV0

it's May Day in Baltimore

May Day Baltimore

i went to college in catonsville and got to interview daniel berrigan, long after he’d left the area, for a paper i was writing on the connection between hiv justice and anti-war movements. (he dedicated his time to both.) he was generous with his time and incredibly thoughtful

American badass.

Remembering Daniel Berrigan, the inspiring Jesuit priest, writer, and antiwar activist, who died on this day in 2016. His participation in a 1968 draft-card burning protest in Catonsville, MD helped shape the Vietnam War resistance movement. www.baltimoremagazine.com/section/hist...

Price of gold was $36 an ounce in 1970. It closed today at $3,353. Brooks Robinson? Priceless.

Baltimore organizations, don't use GenA.I. images in your posts. Seriously. There are loads of free images available online (e.g. on Baltimore Heritage's Flickr page) OR you can pay an actual human artist for their work!!

In a new memo, Attorney General Pam Bondi said the DOJ will allow for subpoenas, court orders and search warrants to get information and testimony from journalists.

Good story on revealing findings on inequality & social mobility. This quote: “Kids from more advantaged backgrounds don’t have bigger brains, they have bigger lives.” Finds even poor white kids w/ troubled behavior better able to get blue collar careers due to connections Black kids lacked.

Originally published shortly after the Baltimore Uprising, this story found a big audience looking to know more about its root causes. "The Past as Prologue" chronicles a small team of sociologists who shadowed Baltimore City students from first grade through their 28th birthdays.

We’re deporting only the criminals, aren’t we? “the scientist who developed computer scripts to read its images and unlock its full potential has been in an immigration detention center for two months — putting crucial scientific advancements at risk.”

Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott delivered his State of the City address Monday night, in which he highlighted significant progress in reducing violent crime and outlined future plans for the city's growth and development.

These posts but in 1948 before a state referendum seals Baltimore City's borders, causing irrevocable harm that continues to this day.

Here's this weekend's cartoon for The Baltimore Sun #cartoon #satire

This is an obvious point, but cannot overstated. There is an enormous difference between deporting someone - where they get off a plane as a free citizen in their home country AND FUNNELING THEM INTO A BRUTAL PRISON FROM WHICH THEY HAVE NO CHANCE OF EVER EMERGING!!!

I said my main goal of this trip was to meet with Kilmar. Tonight I had that chance. I have called his wife, Jennifer, to pass along his message of love. I look forward to providing a full update upon my return.
