Oh hey, lookie here RFK Jr—the “CDC estimates that influenza #vaccination prevented 📌9.8 million influenza-related illnesses, 📌4.8 million medical visits, 📌120,000 influenza-related hospitalizations, & 📌7,900 influenza-related deaths” in 2023-2024. ➡️Maybe don’t block flu vaccine production? 🙏

This is catastrophic for US public health…so many people are protected by timely planning and rollout of the flu vaccine each year.

A very very dark day for public health in the US, and because our world is so interconnected, for public health worldwide. www.nytimes.com/2025/02/13/u...

“This is a blatant attempt to gut the universities and health research that have saved so many lives and given economic opportunity to so many people.” @iwashyna.bsky.social on impact of new NIh order to cut research indirect costs. www.statnews.com/2025/02/07/n...

NIH funded researchers and all who care: This is an excellent call script that you can adapt to your own situation and send to your family and friends to call their reps.

I recommend a viewing of Casablanca at the start of every year. So good every time. Happy 2025!

No wonder we're in shock . . .

Great thread on polio! And gives me the opportunity to plug @hwunsch.bsky.social’s excellent book, The Autumn Ghost, on how the Copenhagen #polio epidemic of 1952 shaped modern #ICU!

I spent Thanksgiving week reading The Autumn Ghost by @hwunsch.bsky.social and, oh man, what a great book. I knew the outlines of how the Danish polio epidemic led to mass hand-ventilation and on to ventilators but so much more. Thanks @chriscarrollmd.bsky.social (I think) for the rec too.

Naum Shaparin and I did residency together. He has experienced the unthinkable - the death of his son from SUDEP (sudden unexpected death in epilepsy). He has set up a foundation to help educate people about this conditon that (unlike SIDS) people don’t know about. If at the #pga78 stop by…booth 416

A great reminder to stick to your vision… Ken Burns pitched his civil war #documentary and was told “no one will watch this”. 40 million tuned in when it aired on #pbs.

International Disabilities Day. Rehumanise a group of people who have consistently been dehumanised. 🙏

Really appreciate the enthusiastic comments about The Autumn Ghost! Makes a great holiday present for any history/book lovers in your life.

Simple question: based on the available data, which med would you choose for your mother? I call it “the mother test” as a check on so many things we do.

Full migration to Bluesky! Looking forward to finding people here.
