It‘s semester break and I go into the lab and feel the need to clean … see the result of cleaning behind the hplc!

Review written by former postdoc on nematode glycans …

arxiv.org/abs/2501.00536 Study on Cacio e Pepe … as mentioned in today’s @nytimes.com

Our new paper on #Dictyostelium glycomics is online (typeset version to follow). Lots of wierd structures in D. purpureum & D. giganteum - species-specific galactosylated 🟡 or fucosylated 🔺 antennae, plus the sulphate and methylphosphate typical of D. discoideum. #glycotime doi.org/10.1016/j.bb...

So Oriol was wrong! FUT10/11 are not mammalian core alpha1,3-fucosyltransferases! (JBC paper from 2009.) But I was always suspicious of those data …

My question: Why should research councils pay so much so that Elsevier and Springer have such huge profits? Governments and the EU regulate so much, so why not the cost of scientific publishing? Or is the lobbying by publishers too successful? www.science.org/content/arti...

Carder et al. meticulously mapped out the rates of photo-driven stereoisomerization among the hexose sugars. A mix of computational and organic chemistry. www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...

Biological condensates! www.asbmb.org/asbmb-today/...

Serine-rich repeat protein as an adhesin mediating bacterial colonization of fruit fly gut, inhibitable by wheat germ agglutinin. #glycotime www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...

I’m looking for a postdoc with experience in #glycosyltransferases and/or yeast/insect #proteinexpression A new EU pathfinder project begins on 1st February 2025. Contact me if interested!

Merry Christmas!

Bovine kidney fucosidase, the general purpose enzyme (except for core 1,3-Fuc) is no longer available from Sigma! But does anyone have a citation for its first isolation/characterisation. I have searched in vain!

So much to love in this recent study by Matt Paszek and coworkers at Cornell, bioorthogonal glycan imaging using expansion microscopy, published ACS Cent. Sci. pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/...

Rachel Handlin is possibly the first person with Down syndrome to receive an M.F.A., and one of just a few to hold a bachelor’s. Her first solo show features her portraits of others like her. www.nytimes.com/2024/12/14/s...

Talking point: Should journals switch off automatic reminders, to accept/decline review assignments or to complete reviews, at weekends?

New freeze-drier delivered! Hopefully functions better than the last one. Perhaps not the highest hi-tech, but necessary for labwork!

Sign in the men’s in Beihai Park, Beijing, typical of many toilets in China. One small step forward, a big step for civilization!

Fuji-san 富士山

Polar lights as seen from flight to Beijing - on the photo more extreme than with naked eye!

New York City!

Where am I for the second time in seven days?

Yesterday I received the MCP/ASBMB award - which is a great honour! I have to carry a heavy box with the glass “trophy” - made it already twice through airport security (but today they did check it physically!) - next and last flight tomorrow! I see I’ve suddenly gained lots of BlueSky followers!

Dancing glycobiologists!

Tomorrow is #WorldDownSyndromeDay - 21st March (think of trisomy of chromosome 21). It’s a day to remember that all people are equally entitled to life and fair treatment, regardless of chromosome number! If you’re wearing socks 🧦 tomorrow considering wearing an “odd pair”!
