It’s been 7(?) years since I went to the Library of Congress to do research, I think. But I hit pay dirt. You just don’t know unless you actually go looking in the boxes… thanks to the Folklife Center. Prayers for their ongoing work.

I get booking inquiries periodically. I will play (have played) anywhere. The only requirements: Money: You pay for my travel from wherever I was the day before the gig. The fee is $135-300 - a day’s work.

recorded in Beirut July 1910 by the Gramophone Company. I am at present aware of 58 sides recorded by this vocal artist from Jaffa, Palestine, 11 of which have been reissued youtu.be/e_gUGaS0HGo

2 Canary releases coming this week after a month off: -4 sides by a Palestinian Arab singer recorded in Beirut ca. early 20s. Very brief notes. -30 minutes of mid-30s field recordings from Mali, Nigeria, & Cameroon with long notes. (Traveling to D.C. to get as much detail and accuracy as possible.)

forthcoming in May: A new volume of texts on the subject of the electronic music of the great composer Eliane Radigue including my 1997 interview with her. www.blankforms.org/publications...

Evergreen song. Composed by a 19th century Ottoman ambassador. He found out his wife died while he was traveling. Bereaved, flattened, and hollowed out, he wrote this in response. Recorded many times. Powerful melody.

advanced notice: I'll be giving this talk at the Romaniote synagogue on Broome St in NYC on Sun March 30, at Rhizome outside D.C. on April 1, and at the Jewish Museum in Baltimore of April 3. Alert the appropriate authorities. www.rhizomedc.org/new-events/2...

After a very grumpy start to the day, I happened to see Rod Lee at the post office and took the opportunity to thank him for all the joy he’s given to me and Baltimore all these years. Shook my hand and gave me a smile and I feel great now. youtu.be/hLfbq4SoyCk?...

I just added a nearly played-to-death side to a Canary collection. It's on A.J. Macksoud's label from Little Syria, Washington St., Manhattan, ca. 1923-24. The singer Assad Dekroub is that rarest of things on US discs, a Muslim. canary-records.bandcamp.com/track/woodah...

single from the forthcoming Mary Kouyoumdjian / Kronos 4tet LP is their arrangement of Zabelle Panosian’s “Groung.” youtu.be/Ki0rosO05OE?...

New Subscriber-Only Canary Release Reissued many times with widely varying sound quality due largely to their having originally released on poor quality material by a small indie label, Lennie Tristano’s early recordings are worth revisiting. Among the most elevated bop and pre-figuring free jazz.

Going to this Feb 23 in Takoma Park MD www.rhizomedc.org/new-events/2...

It’s a beautiful piece, but I’m left feeling in these situations that the editors and writers of American publications are deficient in appreciating artists during their lifetime. A listing in a “10 best” is not an appreciation. It’s not even 1000 words. www.nytimes.com/2025/02/06/a...

WOW Someone posted the Blue Note 2LP test pressing of Ornette's 1962 Town Hall show. This side was omitted from the ESP-Disk release that resulted from O.C. giving up and signing it over to Bernard Stollman for single disc release at a nominal flat fee youtu.be/su_o2BUHgiM

Essay on Zabelle Panosian's "Groung" by David Harrington (Kronos Quartet) "When I write my novel, the main character will be Zabelle Panosian’s two highest notes in “Groung.” These notes seem to float weightlessly over us yet are impossibly, inconsolably heavy.”

CDs arrived at the JMM exhibit, and I got to show it to my daughter who edited the video part of it.

A second two-our interview I did with Roger Smith is being broadcast from noon to two on Friday Feb. 7 on wrfi.org from Ithaca NY. It'll be archived on the station's site for two weeks, and after that it'll be parked for keeps with the last year's two-hour episode at smithmeaword.com .

Tompkins Square is putting out a book on Friday (Record Store Day) called Treasures Untold : A Modern 78 RPM Reader. It contains a reprint of my interview with researcher and producer Dick Spottswood, originally printed in Sound American a decade ago.

There’s no bandcamp friday until March. But ffor Canary you can use the code “february” at checkout and get 20% off anything — digital albums, physical media, or the discography (which would be $195 for 175 albums with the discount). canary-records.bandcamp.com/track/moira-...
