If King’s College London is not going to take action against this sort of screaming mob rule, it should face OfS sanctions and serious fines. Shitij Kapur has blown hot air on free speech, and needs to show he means it, not only for hecklers. x.com/SFaeze_Alavi...

Thread on the situation facing UK HE: institutions have lost around one-third of fee income since fees were frozen in 2017, while there has been a fall in international students. Universities across the sector are thus running significant deficits. (1)

My second article for Café Américain, opposing cultural populism, paying tribute to the work of Greg Philo and Jim McGuigan, but critical of that of Stuart Hall, is now un-paywalled for a limited period. cafeamericainmag.com/against-cult...

Excellent stuff from William Hague in his inaugural as Chancellor of Oxford University today

Around 200 jobs are expected to go at Bangor University after it missed its student recruitment targets – the latest in a series of cost-cutting exercises affecting Welsh institutions, reports @twilliamsthe.bsky.social #AcademicSky #EduSky

If scholarly study of music, as defined in this article, was required in order to get a *degree* in music, the sector would be about one-fifth of the size it is now. In a few years almost the only scholarly music degrees will be at the Russell Group. www.timeshighereducation.com/opinion/card...

Dire situation of scholarly music also comes from within universities - non-scholar practitioners who try to marginalise what they can’t do, and ethnomusicologists/sound studies people who want it only to be their areas, which would attract 1-2 students. www.timeshighereducation.com/opinion/card...

I'm not an expert on the context here so am not commenting on that, but what does strike me here is the distinction between the different kinds of music qualifications - theory, performance, management and so on. Working at (the SA of) a university that trades on its specialisms, this is helpful.

Opinion: Most music courses are already performance- or employment-focused. The demise of another scholarly programme will skew the balance further, says @ianpace.bsky.social #AcademicSky #EduSky

‘the difference between her [Larner’s] university’s [Cardiff’s] offering and RWCMD’s is akin to that between scholarly study of Shakespeare at, say, the University of Warwick and training to be a Shakespearean actor at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts.’ www.timeshighereducation.com/opinion/card...

Many academic managers imagine that the primary purpose of a music degree is to train practical musicians. The value of scholarly study of the subject, mostly understood with literature, say, is little comprehended. Me in @timeshighered.bsky.social www.timeshighereducation.com/opinion/card...

My new piece for @timeshighered.bsky.social , following the Cardiff VC’s comment implying that what her uni and the Royal Welsh College offer are similar. We need to clearly distinguish scholarly, conservatoire and vocational courses to avoid confusion. www.timeshighereducation.com/opinion/card...

Absolutely essential reading on the implications of current US moves re Ukraine, and what Putin might do next. The prospect of full-out war in Europe looks worse than ever. www.ft.com/content/f268...

We are grateful for the more than 100 alumni who have submitted their experiences of Cardiff University School of Music. If you haven't so far, it's not too late as there is no deadline and the more the better. forms.gle/a6jPMu5H6KZ2...

The letter from trustees of the Society for Music Analysis to Wendy Larner, VC of Cardiff University, about plans to close the School of Music and the comparison of it with the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, is now on the website. www.sma.ac.uk/2025/02/stat...

As well as cutting Music, Cardiff’s new School of Global Humanities will not feature language-learning. The term ‘global’ has become glib.

Fabulous, fighting spirit from the Society for Music Analysis, the latest learned group to condemn Cardiff University's blatant cultural self-immolation. www.sma.ac.uk/2025/02/stat...

The letter from the Society for Music Analysis to the VC of Cardiff University, about the decision to close the School of Music and also her comments on this and the Royal Welsh College, presented as if they offered similar things.

A few months ago, I published (in Galician) a book of micro-essays about things that have shaped my experience of the UK. The title translates as "Pragmatic pagans" - to me, two of the most salient traits of the British mindset. Anyway, here's my own translation of one of the pieces - on mugs.

In their inside story of Starmer’s rise, which we serialise this weekend, Patrick Maguire and Gabriel Pogrund reveal how the strategist courted the hard left to save Brexit

Similarly, if any specific to music study is hollowed out, and it becomes just a branch of sociology or anthropology, as some ethnomusicologists want, managers will see that sociology or anthropology departments can do that, and better.

The Cardiff VC has been on Radio 4, justifying the cut because there are ‘two music schools in Cardiff’. This is a fundamental misunderstanding of how what the Royal Welsh and the Uni offer are wholly different. But this can happen when academics dissolve boundaries between scholarship and practice.

Excellent news - all other organisations should also drop Stonewall (and Athena Swan) too. Whitehall’s biggest departments dump Stonewall diversity scheme www.thetimes.com/article/c13b...

I am writing a new piece for The Critic on universities in the UK to which those still seeking to study classical music should or should not consider. Here is a piece that Rebekah Donn and I wrote for the SMA on analysis in UK UG curricula. www.sma.ac.uk/2023/07/the-...

My new article for Café Américain, on the important work of Jim McGuigan and Greg Philo, both of who died last year, in challenging the pernicious aspects of the legacy of Stuart Hall and cultural studies. Currently paywalled but will become OA in time. cafeamericainmag.com/against-cult...

Two of Jeffrey Herf’s books which are essential reading on this subject.

Important article by major historian Jeffrey Herf. Alas I worry about his advice to young Jewish historians to leave the profession - many of the hugely antisemitic woke factions, who parrot Hamas propaganda, would deeply like academia to be Judenfrei. quillette.com/2025/01/15/a...

was mostly keeping it together until I read Kyle MacLachlan's tribute to David Lynch
