Things I learned from this video: -Zohran Mamdani was arrested in front of City Hall and went on a 15-day hunger strike -yellow cab drivers like Mouhamadou were $750K in debt -several cab drivers committed suicide -mayoral ads can also be about celebrating Iftar with spicy Bengali food in the Bronx

'An advantage like extreme wealth, inherited or earned, curdles quickly into entitlement. And when entitlement is widely distributed among the very powerful, it becomes everybody’s problem.' Abigail Disney's outspoken pleas begging to pay more in taxes are always a fun read.

OK, here is your one-minute primer on the whole concept of "trickle down economics," from the obituary of Fred Smith, the founder of Fedex. I mean, if you still can't see it, I have no hope for you.

I’ve given up on the possibility of having a permanent office at Penn, so I’m getting rid of 100+ 📚 — lots of art + design, mostly duplicate, pristine promo/exam copies! I’ll schlep them incrementally over to Fisher Bennett Hall — first floor, outside the English office. Free to good 🏠! First set:

Also don't leave dogs in cars and don't walk them during the heat of the day, sidewalks can burn those paws.

Damn—the Senate parliamentarian has ruled that a LOT of the reconciliation bill requires 60 votes to pass, including a massive assault on federal regulations and several heinous attacks on civil service protections. This effectively guts a big chunk of the bill. www.budget.senate.gov/ranking-memb...

This goes the the fat boys too...you already have a beach body. 😘😘

If you hesitate at all about vaccines or think that measles is no big deal, read this. Should be required reading.

Researchers in Canada saw marked declines in spatial memory in chronic GPS users. Neuroscientists in England found that the hippocampi of newly hired London cab drivers grew significantly larger as their knowledge of the city's streets increased. Navigation can improve the health of your brain.

Air conditioning is an absolutely vital life-saving technology on a swiftly-warming planet, and people who claim it's somehow more shameful to cool a home than it is to heat one are idiots. I wrote this a few years ago and still stand by it: foreignpolicy.com/2022/01/16/c...

Fantastic piece by @oisinmcgann.bsky.social. Ireland has the sort of artist lottery system I was lobbying for in Durham, but even that is only a short-term fix for a much deeper problem. We need Universal Basic Income now (and starting with artists is not a bad idea).

Mayor Jimmy Walker would like a word.

Incidentally, this is also why biofuels trigger indirect land-use change. Vegetable oil is also traded on a global market, with prices linked between oils & across countries. So when the US diverts ~half of its soybean oil to biofuels (as we do now), that drives up veg oil demand & land conversion.

if you've had a shitty week, here's the fantastic news you needed: solar is SO efficient now that nothing else really comes close. Solar farms like this- under which other countries plant crops that thrive in the controlled bright shade- are the easy future. this makes me sleep okay at night 😌

In the early 1990s, Ireland was getting more than 40% of its electricity from coal. Last week it closed its last coal plant: www.bloomberg.com/news/article...

Once again, I must post this photo of Darwin, aka Science Officer Meow. He is here to make it better.

A HISTORIC MILESTONE: For the first time, solar power generated more electricity globally than nuclear, making it the world’s 4th largest power source. In just 5 years, solar output nearly tripled—from 79 TWh (Apr 2020) to 233 TWh (Apr 2025). The energy transition is speeding up. @ember-energy.org

Young New Yorkers of every class, race and gender. This is truly your time. Come out tomorrow like you never have before and you'll have a much better shot of a future in this city if it's not run by Cuomo. You are needed to counter what Gen X and older are going to do.

NYC friends: this poor dog was almost on his freedom ride out of the pound when his foster didn't show up on him. He's now in danger of being put down. Do you have space in your home and heart to adopt him? ❤️ Also, lots of animals at this NYC shelter who need a home. nycacc.app#/browse/225834

Every time someone responds to an obviously normative-aspirational claim ("this not who we are", "this is not America", etc) with some I'm-very-radical descriptive rebuttal ("er actually America has always done <similar bad stuff>") an angel dies. Like, no joke, dead. Direct causal result of this.
