Really sad about this. OC, aside from being one of my first jobs, plays a crucial role in informing the public and holding power to account in the North and South Caucasus, often in very difficult circumstances. oc-media.org/oc-media-fac...

absolutely fucking mental

“Germans will never forget that America rescued us from ourselves in 1945, protected us throughout the cold war and, after the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, benevolently oversaw the democratisation and integration of most of Europe.” www.ft.com/content/b36c...

Massive encroachment by Bezos into The Washington Post’s opinion section - makes clear dissenting views will not be published I still have not felt encroachment on my journalism on the news side, but if Bezos tries interfering with the news side I will be quitting immediately and letting you know

After the weekend’s election, the pillars which underpinned Germany’s postwar politics, security and economy are gone, writes @ido.bsky.social. www.prospectmagazine...

“Europe will either rise to the occasion or disintegrate. Europeans will need to create far stronger co-operation embedded in a robust framework of liberal and democratic norms. If they do not, they will be picked to pieces by the world’s great powers.” www.ft.com/content/b46e...

It’s a big problem for any discussion of autonomy or independence in Europe that plans will only ever be one bad election in the UK, France or Germany away from being kneecapped. I’m not sure it’s a solvable problem.

There’s this car rental startup in Berlin called Miles who have a persistent problem with… let’s call it vandalism. I don’t know what a “Power Miles” is but this is the first time I’ve seen it and it’s even better

Germany has been reborn three times since 1945. The first was in 1949, with the formation of the Federal Republic. The second was reunification in 1990. Yesterday’s federal election is the third. Me for @prospectmagazine.co.uk www.prospectmagazine.co.uk/world/europe...

I’ve written for @unherd.com about Sahra Wagenknecht’s narrow failure to enter the Bundestag unherd.com/newsroom/sah...

I’ll be on the BBC World Service’s OS radio programme at 1700 GMT, talking about the view from Germany on three years since the invasion of Ukraine.

Don’t think it’s right to talk about CDU-SPD as a “grand coalition”. Grand coalitions are between the biggest parties in a parliament; that’s no longer the case. Black-red is just a coalition.

Cheery

BSW falling short by 0.03% of the vote is the funniest outcome imaginable.

This is the most wretched campaign of deliberate, explicit persecution the United States has perpetrated against a minority group in decades. Many of the most important people in politics and journalism are busying themselves trying to figure out how little to say or do about it.

Four takeaways on the German election for @thespectator1828.bsky.social: 1) The AfD’s result is epoch-defining. For the first time since the formation of the Federal Republic, the far right has come second in a national election. www.spectator.co.uk/article/is-f...

Brilliant but devastating editorial in the Financial Times. “In the past 10 days, he [Trump] has all but incinerated 80 years of postwar American leadership. If you are not at the table, you are on the menu. America has turned.”

feel like X gets most of the flak but racism on Instagram is also off the scale

This is bang on. I switched off notifications from news organisations which take the piss years ago. We are not psychologically built for a 24/7 deluge of news beamed directly to our most personal object. Not hard to figure out who this is about either.

Wow. The Bessent FT op-ed on the US economic development plan for Ukraine is quite something. This is a nineteenth century great power behaviour. www.ft.com/content/91a7...

To understand the significance of the AfD possibly coming second in today’s federal election, consider that in every West German and then German federal election since 1949, no party other than the CDU or SPD has ever placed first or second.

I’d like to think I’m the first person to get into a flame war with VPOTUS from the swimming pool of Woburn Center Parcs at half-term.
