Usefully sober fact sheet on Ukraine. Please share with those who need it. understandingwar.org/backgrounder...

This is an excellent and timely factsheet on Ukraine, U.S. v. European security assistance, and other misunderstood or lied about aspects of the war, by our friends at @thestudyofwar.bsky.social. I'll summarize a few main points below, with additional sources of my own:

"Most Americans don’t want to believe that their government is taking lifesaving medicine away from sick people in Africa, or betraying Afghans who sacrificed for this country" But it is. www.theatlantic.com/magazine/arc...

We're entering a turbulent period when it will become ever more difficult and ever more important to separate news from noise. I can think of no better recommendation for Walter Russell Mead's podcast than simply the fact that he so adeptly does that. Just listen to this week's episode:

The stop-work order on U.S.A.I.D.-funded research has left thousands of people with experimental drugs and devices in their bodies, with no access to monitoring or care. www.nytimes.com/2025/02/06/h...

Let's revisit this quote in 2 to 4 years. “Competent white men must be in charge if you want things to work.” — Darren Beattie www.cnn.com/2025/02/03/p...

Musk claims he's shutting down USAID because it's a hotbed of the far left, while the actual far left celebrates the move as a step towards curbing US imperialism. Meanwhile, russia and local dictators rejoice because the human rights and opposition activists lost their funding. The dumbest times!

This is not just a "pause." It is an unlawful destruction now. Foreign aid is a cornerstone of national security with diplomacy and defense. USAID's work reaches 100s of millions worldwide and America will be harmed. Here are some of the lives at stake.

Tens of thousands of Afghans who risked their lives working for the U.S. government or military are now in limbo after the Trump administration issued two executive orders targeting refugees.

Putin, OTOH, doesn't have to share awkward laughs and handshakes w major political foes and with people he feels betrayed him. He poisons them and blows their planes out of the sky. I hope the US continues to keep this contrast with russia stark and crystal clear.

One of the most reliable ways to improve our mental health is to help others. After being randomly assigned to do just 3 acts of kindness a week, people felt significantly less depressed, anxious, and lonely. Lifting others up elevates us too. Giving shows us that we matter.

British musician Sting performed with Ukrainian soldier Taras Stolyar, who played “Shape of My Heart” on the bandura. The performance took place in Los Angeles at Sean Penn's house, after which Stolyar accompanied Sting at his solo concert.

😂russia has always had limitless chutzpah. It can't conquer Donbas, its economy is running on exhaust fumes, its demographic crisis is taking monstrous proportions, but it thinks it gets to redraw the world map. And some in the West take these fever dreams seriously and feel obliged to humour them.

To bring Safe Terrains to Ukraine, people donated US $50k yesterday alone to bring us well across our goal for purchasing de-mining robots. Thank you all!

I have covered both Musk and Alex a lot, and only one of them is a useful idiot for Putin and also a heinous person. The other is a patriot who did his job with distinction and is a very good man. Guess which is which: thehill.com/policy/techn...
