Hard agree. My plan so far has been to bring the Mastodon people along in one big tent but so often when I mention public social media infrastructure people shake their head sadly and say "Oh, yeah, Mastodon… That's never going to work." We need to somehow unpoison the well.

What is the goal of UK gov? Universities already at a loss with (domestic) teaching & research + decreasing revenue: ⬇️foreign students (barriers+levies on foerign students) & ⬇️ UKRI budget (real terms). How to reconcile high growth/innovation with a crippled research & education sector?

Two senior @ukri.org figures this week have suggested unis could reduce how much research they do “Concentrating on unique and high contributions & concentrating on less research, has the potential to bring the amount of activity into balance with research funding,” Steven Hill told #ARMA25 (1/2)

Iran is experiencing a near Internet blackout today, starting at ~5:00 PM local time. We see significant drops across networks. Some networks, including MCCI and Rightel appear to be responsive. Follow connectivity in Iran in near realtime: ioda.inetintel.cc.gatech.edu/country/IR?f...

Lots of great replies on this. But may I just say two things about two of the solutions suggested? 1) A return to in-person exams: good luck getting a university to allow tutors to do that! 2) Vivas: many UG modules have hundreds of students on them, so impossible - unless AI conducts & marks them!
