Hard agree. My plan so far has been to bring the Mastodon people along in one big tent but so often when I mention public social media infrastructure people shake their head sadly and say "Oh, yeah, Mastodon… That's never going to work." We need to somehow unpoison the well.

But may I just say two things about two of the solutions suggested? 1) A return to in-person exams: good luck getting a university to allow tutors to do that! 2) Vivas: many UG modules have hundreds of students on them, so impossible - unless AI conducts & marks them!
