This new book by @uolpress.bsky.social is nothing short but a monumental achievement on Latin American #liberationtheology! Among the most interesting (English) surveys in recent years! The chapter on Fals Borda by Díaz-Arévalo @sheffielduni.bsky.social is a gem. Foreword by M. Zechmeister at UCA.

Two Weeks In The Death Spiral Of Cardiff University, by an anonymous academic. This is truly shocking read. The Cardiff executive board should hang their heads in shame. voice.cymru/two-weeks-in...

"From migration routes that redraw the map to the traces of erased histories, from the margins of a poem to the frontlines of protest, we invite researchers to explore boundaries, crossings, and intersections—and the spaces in between, where meaning is made and remade."

Our festival theme in 2025 is 'Between the Lines' —a space of hidden histories, shifting borders, and unspoken meanings. Read more: www.beinghumanfestival.org/news/between...

I'm horrified by Cardiff's VC here: ‘the idea that Wales cannot be global without modern languages, I'm less clear about’. This reveals an appalling lack of understanding of Modern Languages research across the UK, not just in Cardiff wydandiebailey.substack.com/p/in-defence...

Delighted to share news of a free in-person workshop I've co-organised in May at the ILCS (@ilcs.bsky.social) to discuss the need for explicitly antifascist pedagogies against the rising tide of far-right support and what that practice would look like. Info here: ilcs.sas.ac.uk/events/devel...

"The Welsh government has announced that it will provide £19 million in extra funding for its universities after several institutions announced wide-ranging cuts...The bulk of the money – £18.5 million – will be used to support universities to fund estate maintenance and digital projects"

UCFL has written to senior management at Cardiff University to emphasize the critical role and importance of its language degree programmes, and with a request to halt the current proposals for cuts 👇 university-council-for-languages.org/2025/02/14/u...

'Ending Modern Languages at Cardiff would be a colossally short-sighted & counter-productive move. Wales has a proud record of commitment to linguistic pluralism, & the excellent work of Modern Languages at Cardiff is a critically important contribution to that. Please rethink urgently.' An excellent and informative website in defence of the Modern Languages department at @cardiffuni.bsky.social. Well done to the team behind this ✊✊ #SaveCardiffLanguages

I am recruiting survey participants!! *Have you (or do you know anyone who has) completed a doctoral degree in languages (Arabic, BSL, French, German etc.) and then moved into a different field of research or employment?* 🧑‍🎓➡️👨‍🎨🧑‍🏫👩‍🚀

"The research produced there is world-leading. If we lose these courses, we will lose more than thousands of devoted and pioneering academics. We will create a system where only the wealthy and privileged get to study the very subjects that make Britain what it is."

Please share this important survey on how graduates perceive the value of doctoral degrees in languages, aimed at those who have moved into different areas of research or work: forms.office.com/pages/respon... @ilcs.bsky.social @ucflangs.bsky.social @ucfl-eca.bsky.social

From today’s BBC, our UEA UCU branch chair Dr Nadine Zubair “students and staff are affected by the cuts "in every aspect of their experience here: their morale, their workloads - everything is taking a hit”. Staying positive at the moment is beyond us

"For Cardiff University final-year languages student Darcie James, 23, the headlines hit close to home after her university last month announced plans to cut 400 jobs and close some courses."

This ITV Wales piece is really strong on the Cardiff Uni cuts crisis. Lots of angry Cardiff UCU members & lots of angry students speaking against these callous and unnecessary cuts. #CUFightback youtu.be/KZy7_8Yapys?...

The planned MFL cuts placed the university in “direct contradiction” with Welsh govt policy and international strategy. The cuts undermine Cardiff’s role in supporting the linguistic diversity that is critical for the regional economy, the teacher pipeline, and for international partnerships.

"The global examination of culture is not possible without languages at degree level." An excellent article on the threatened closure of #languages and #translation at Cardiff and on the importance and value of degree courses in languages for UK HE. www.timeshighereducation.com/opinion/card...

"Cardiff has embraced the entirely bizarre proposition that the global and transtemporal examination of culture is possible even without the provision of languages at degree level. There are very many reasons why this is alarming." 👇👇
