Jennifer Jones, as I thought when I first saw this in 2012, and several times since, is simply exceptional and more than deserving of her Oscar. The rest of the film is first rate in just about every regard, as well. A must see from the 1940s. 5/5

A very happy birthday to Jennifer Jones, one of my all time favorites! I'll be celebrating with the first film I ever saw her in, and one that got me into classic film, The Song of Bernadette! It's also in my Top 100, so I'll be interested in seeing how well it holds up!

An excellent little movie. Wonderful in its simplicity and very heartfelt, The Stranger's Return deserves to be seen so much more than it has been. 5/5

Sorry, Franchot Tone, you're my excuse to rewatch this hard to find gem, featuring the wonderful Miriam Hopkins. If you're ever able to track The Stranger's Return down, do so!

Great melodramatic film noir, with the usual twists and turns to keep one invested. Missing something to push it into the near top/actual top of the bunch but definitely a worthwhile movie. Also, Gale, despite being inherently and grossly miscast as Eurasian, was great in her small part. 4/5

Late celebration of Gale Sondergaard's birthday. This time, it's a Bette Davis vehicle (first Bette this year) I haven't seen in a while!

A bona-fide masterpiece. Don't really have much to say about this one. It's just incredible.

Tonight we continue to ignore the Cary Grant film I continue to put off for other slightly shorter movies. This one is my first Akira Kurosawa rewatch of the year, in belated celebration of Isuzu Yamada's birthday!

I found an old ranking of Disney characters and a separate one for movies I did for a long deleted site, and I'm cringing at some of these placements....

It's a charming little film. Not too deep but a fun bit of escapism. Musical numbers are definitely better than the plot, though. 3.5/5

Belated celebration of Vera-Ellen's birthday with the only movie of hers that I actually have: White Christmas. This is a rewatch, so let's see how it holds up!

Late celebration for Eva Gabor's birthday with the 1977 classic, The Rescuers.

Gonna have a bit of fun before bed. Watching a Cesar Romero movie I've never seen before to celebrate his birthday (the 15th). Tall, Dark and Handsome is an apt title ❤

Yeah... not good. Decent enough story, but presentation is poor, the acting less than stellar, for the most part, the sound incomprehensible at times. Ooof. 2.5/5 possibly a 2. Chester Morris was nominated for an Oscar for this. He's fine. I wouldn't give him a nod, but it's nice he has this one.

Not tired so I'm having a belated celebration of Chester Morris' birthday with a now public domain title, Alibi. He's an underrated actor, by the way!

What a great film, and what a gorgeous restoration. Perhaps not to the level of the 54 version (based on memory) but works wonderfully. 5/5

Adolphe Menjou is my excuse to rewatch this version of A Star is Born. I would have watched a movie or so in the past two days but had no idea how to follow up Cinderella... and so here we are.

Grand Hotel is a very good but flawed movie that doesn't connect everything like it should, and not everyone is a great fit for their parts, but there's this certain earnestness to it all that brings it all together. Joan Crawford and John Barrymore shine here. 4/5

"Why, it's like a dream! A wonderful dream come true!" My absolute favorite of all time, one that will never age a day! As wonderful as it was all those years ago! Happily giving this a 5/5!

Time to rewatch Cinderella for the 75th anniversary!

Happy anniversary to the film that changed everything for me and has been with me since I first saw it over 25 years ago. Happy 75th to Cinderella!

Time to see how well this unique Best Picture winner (winning only on the Best Picture nom) has held up in the 10ish years that it's been since I first saw it! For John Barrymore on his birthday!

Was nice to look at Van Heflin- I mean, good to see this again. Take a good while after the prologue to get going, but I just loved how melodramatic it all got. Also Van was great, so can't complain. 4/5

Late celebration of Judith Anderson, with her small part in The Strange Love of Martha Ivers (first rewatch of this movie). Really this is an excuse to look at Van Heflin again.

James Dean #2 for the year. Won't be seeing him again until the last quarter of the year. I'm overdue a rewatch of East of Eden, which was in my 100 for a little while. Let's see if it can keep that perfect score.

And I forgot this one, too. An incredibly charming musical by Lubitsch, with excellent work from all involved, adding to the excellent humor. 4.5/5, if only because it feels like it's missing that certain something.

Whoops forgot to comment on this one, though I really don't need to. Great great movie. Definitely worth seeing again 5/5

One more silent tonight. This one by the Man of a Thousand Faces, himself: Lon Chaney.

A simply outstanding film for one that's so simple. Definitely one of the last great masterpieces of the silent era. 5/5

Annoyingly don't own the VHS (and don't have a laserdisc player) for The Crowd, so onto the internet I go! Sorry, James Murray, I'm using you as an excuse to rewatch this Top 100 entry.

No words, other than it's absolutely one of the greatest films ever made. Simply magnificent in every regard. 5/5

Ending the night with a big one. One that sits just outside my Top 10 and could be a serious threat to dethroning one of those movies. For the wonderful and underrated Lana Turner on her birthday, it's the 1959 Imitation of Life!

Rewatching a musical I really liked and using Charles Ruggles as an excuse to do so. Later tonight is going to be a major favorite!
