Our new publication: chapter "Life cycle assessment (LCA) of poultry meat production", has now been published as part of the book "Improving poultry meat safety and sustainability". The chapter can be downloaded free of charge from the publisher's website: shop.bdspublishing.com/store/bds/de...

Finland's forests have been stashing away carbon for decades, but that has changed. ‪Ilkka explains why.

Why did Finland's forests change from a carbon sink to a permanent source of emissions in a few years? The reason is simple: emissions from the soil increased exponentially. But what caused this explosion? There are at least three reasons for this, which I will explain in the thread below. 1/9

Some political parties in Norway want to include LULUCF in the Norwegian emission target. From 1990, net GHG emissions have declined 10% compared to 1990 (vs 4% ex LULUCF), but have risen 24% since 2010. The land sink is volatile, so including LULUCF is risky business! 1/

In this new article, we present a consistent framework for including LULUC emissions and removals in the GWP of agricultural and forestry products in LCA. This framework is filling one of biggest gaps that has existed in the LCA methodology so far. www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

Metsähakkuiden määrässä on laskeva trendi vuodesta 2018 lähtien.

In just two years, the GHG emissions from the forest soils in Finland have increased by 33%. At the same time, the carbon sink of living biomass has increased, but despite that, forests are now a source of carbon. Soils are soon becoming the most significant emission source in Finland.

The latest GHG inventory from Finland: Net emissions from agricultural land 8.65 Mt CO2e. From wetlands 2.2 Mt CO2e. From organic forest soils 14 Mt CO2e From mineral forest soils 0.37 Mt CO2e. Climate change has turned soils in Finland into a massive carbon source. www.luke.fi/fi/uutiset/k...

New study on potential of CDR "To attain carbon neutrality goals, the adoption of negative emission technologies such as BECCS is indispensable. By substituting biomass for fossil fuels in energy generation and capturing CO2, BECCS provides great CDR potentials". www.nature.com/articles/s41...

Keskustelin Versowoodin Versio-lehden haastattelussa metsien hiilinielujen historiasta ja tulevaisuudesta, hiilinieluihin perustuvan ilmastopolitiikan tehottomuudesta sekä metsänomistajien roolista ilmastonmuutoksen torjumisessa. Haastattelu sivulla 24. 789c0735.flowpaper.com/Versio22024f...

New paper published. As part of this comprehensive discussion article, we highlight the importance of including the field scale LULUC emissions and removals in the LCA and carbon footprinting of agricultural products and demonstrate the required methodology. www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

Scientists Behind ‘Net Zero’ Concept Say Nations Are Getting It Wrong In a new study, high-profile climate scientists say countries are using flawed carbon accounting by relying too heavily on trees and oceans to absorb new carbon emissions. www.bloomberg.com/news/article...

Softening the definition of Net Zero won’t stop global warming. As authors of the 2009 “Net Zero Papers” we call on countries and companies to recognise the need for Geological Net Zero, balancing flows of carbon into and out of the Earth’s crust. www.theguardian.com/environment/...

"By including passive CO2 uptake, nominal net zero emissions would not halt global warming, undermining the Paris Agreement". www.nature.com/articles/s41...

📢Global Carbon Budget 2024📢 Despite some predicting a peak in global fossil CO2 emissions, we estimate growth of 0.8% [-0.3% to 1.9%] in 2024. Maybe a peak next year? Is it all bad news, or can we find some good news? essd.copernicus.org/preprints/es... 1/
