📢Abstract submission extended until 1st April! Please send us your abstracts for the Political Geography Research Group workshop - and see you at @newcastleuni.bsky.social in June👇

Very much looking forward to our new MA Global Sustainable Futures starting in September, bringing core geography concepts (social justice, sustainability, power, etc) into conversation with debates about key global challenges - more info and how to apply here: www.ncl.ac.uk/postgraduate...

Been reading my copy of @ingridagnete.bsky.social 's new book, hot off the press. Superb account of the creation of 'the Arctic' as a region by peopled state bureaucracies.

So exciting to see students engaging with our new degree programme for 2025 entry! Are you interested in tackling global sustainability challenges? Find out more about our Global Sustainable Futures MA >> bit.ly/41pWqFe

Ran a taster session for our new MA Global Sustainable Futures (@newcastleuni.bsky.social), and asked students how they imagined their global sustainable future. And their responses were wonderful! Sharing a couple of drawings below - and sincerely hope some of their visions come true 🙏💫

Researcher Ingrid A. Medby has researched the #Arctic state identity and what the term 'Arctic' entails for state employees in #Norway, #Canada, and #Iceland @arcticfrontiers.bsky.social #literature @newcastleuni.bsky.social #arcticidentity #booklaunch

Read the latest #WomenintheArcticaandAntarctic interview with Ingrid Medby @ingridagnete.bsky.social @newcastleuni.bsky.social about her new book “Arctic state identity: Geography, history and geopolitical relations” @manchesterup.bsky.social

Ingrid A. Medby har forsket på den #arktiske statsidentiteten og hva begrepet #Arktis betyr for statsansatte i #Norge, #Canada og #Island. Hun håper forskningen kan bidra til mer bevissthet rundt begrepet. @arcticfrontiers.bsky.social @newcastleuni.bsky.social www.highnorthnews.com/nb/har-skrev...

🐻‍❄️OUT NOW Arctic state identity by @ingridagnete.bsky.social charts the reflections and stories of state personnel from Norway, Iceland and Canada. Providing a 'peopled' view of #geopolitics, it explores their shifting roles and identities in a time of rapid environmental change. 🧊

Today is the day, my book "Arctic State Identity: Geography, History, and Geopolitical Relations" is *officially* published! 🙀🙌 Available from @manchesterup.bsky.social: manchesteruniversitypress.co.uk/9781526153906/ #Arctic #Geopolitics #ArcticIdentity

Arctic state identity by @ingridagnete.bsky.social is out next week! 🎧 Listen to Ingrid discuss her research, the value of carrying the title of one of the eight 'Arctic states', and the fluidity of identity, in ep. 62 of the Polar Geopolitics pod:

Look what just arrived!! 🥳 My book, "#Arctic State Identity", is actually real - and I even got it a week before it's officially out on 28th Jan (manchesteruniversitypress.co.uk/9781526153906/), thanks to the amazing editorial team at @manchesterup.bsky.social 🙌

Weekend trip to #Stockholm and (of course) visited this exhibition - "The #Arctic: While the Ice is Melting" - at the Nordiska Museet: www.nordiskamuseet.se/en/exhibitio... It's worth a visit - incl. insights from Indigenous Peoples, scientists, and media about (changing) life in the region. ❄️

It has been a pleasure to work with @statesofprecarity.bsky.social on posters looking at the impact of fixed term contracts (FTC) in Geography (and beyond). 🔵Poster 1 - the challenges of FTC 🔵Poster 2 - How to support colleagues on FTC 🔵Poster 3 - Identity and difference and the impact of FTC

Well this is...worrying 😳

Question for those of you who have published (academic) books: What kind of promotional activities did you do / would you recommend? #academicsky #academic

So, I've been invited to give a seminar at Swansea Uni in February - very excited and honoured! And then I looked at getting there from NCL and feel....less excited 😬 Any travel advice, anyone? (according to Google Maps I can walk there in 5 days with no breaks, seems like a plausible option).

Are you thinking of organising a Political Geography-themed session at the 2025 RGS-IBG Annual Conference? If so, get in touch - we're pleased to extend an invitation for PolGRG session sponsorship: More info here: polgrg.wordpress.com/2024/12/16/p... #RGSIBG2025 #RGSIBG25

A more questionable work-related decision: 1) Buying xmas chocolates for students attending my office hours... Ending up eating most of it myself 😅 (and frankly knowing this would probably happen)

Two work-related decisions I'm very pleased with having made in the last few weeks: 1) Moving to Bluesky; 2) Muting work emails on phone after hours and weekends. Can highly recommend 💆‍♀️ (and should have figured out how much sooner tbh!)

Canada has announced a sweeping Arctic policy aimed at safeguarding the region from climate change, geopolitical tensions, and foreign interference. As part of the new strategy prioritizing strategic cooperation, Canada announced two new consulates. Find out where here:

Despite the new cold war, there is no halt in Norwegian-Russian fishery cooperation. There are even exchanges of fishery inspectors between the Norwegian Coast Guard and the FSB Coast Guard, researcher Geir Hønneland says
