Haven't posted in a while because I was burned out on social media, but I see all the accounts that were shithead sinophobes on X are the same here. Way to go, guys. Being racist asses on one platform just didn't cut it, huh?

So in April I'm returning to China with a friend. Two destinations are set: Shanghai, because she wants to see it, Hangzhou because me + Xiling society = happiness. Recommend us museums, historical sights, both ancient and China's modern/socialist period, curiosities to visit etc.

人無癖情無深 "Those who have no strange obsessions lack deep sentiments" 3 by 3 cm First side inscription: 同癖齋印 "seal of the pavilion of shared obsessions" Second side inscription: 墨花刻 2025.01.03 "carved by Inkflower on 2025.01.03" Seal script Based on《長岱•祁止祥癖》

Been reading Zhang Dai and it's beautiful so far!

心齋 Fasting of the heart-mind 2.5 by 2.5 cm Seal script

Got these absolutely beautiful Qingtian 青田 seal stones! Already have a project for most of these, can't wait to start carving them. Zhou Lianggong noted of his brother that he loved seal stones so much, whenever he got any, he held them in his palms and looked at them into the night. Can understand.

吾書 "My book/calligraphy/writing" 2 by 2 cms seal script side inscription: 吾無知也 "I am the one lacking knowledge" Initially wanted this to be my 藏書印, but the many possible meanings of 書 made me realize this is a multipurpose seal. I love how abstract and art deco it is. #china #art #sealcarving

Been editing a volume of essays on Chinese thought for our department's quarterly publication. It was and to an extent still is a bumpy fucking ride, three people danced back on publishing with us, but so far we have about 75 pages. Dare I say we are so back? I'm enthusiastic about it again.

在屎溺 "[even] in shit and piss" 3 by 3 cm seal script

So I post a lot about seal carving stuff, but would anyone be interested in the seals that I carve through my studies? Like this one saying 吾心在太古 "my heart-mind in remote antiquity" in seal script. #china #history #carvedseal #sealcutting #sealscript #art #xiling #hangzhou #antiquity #stranger

From simple to simplified through oracle bone, seal, chancellor, traditional regular and simplified regular on 龍/龙 and 鑿/凿. 7 hour train ride got me tweaking. #china #history #calligraphy #oraclebones #sealscript #chancellorscript #regularscript #traditional #simplified

What happens when you have awesome DnD nerds for friends? You get amazing hand painted Beholders as gifts. 🤩😍 #dnd #beholder #nerds

Nightly reading about Wu Changshuo and learned of two interesting concepts he employed. Seal for attention, also seals like this is why Wu is still the GOAT of seal carving. Read on below.

Chuds say Ally Louks' PhD thesis devalues the institution of doctoral studies while having full subscriptions to Ph-so-called-D programs of hacks like Jordan Peterson and Andrew Tate of all people. Pull your heads out of Elon's ass. Get a goddamn grip. Go outside. Touch grass.

Ordered a set of these gorgeous Qingtian stones, each will be dedicated to a carver that influenced me, in no particular order: Wu Changshuo, Zhao Zhiqian, Huang Mufu, Deng Shiru and Chen Guobin. A sixth different stone will be dedicated to Zhou Lianggong. My switch Deng Shiru out with Qi Baishi.

Nearing my 13th playthrough of SOMA over the years, that timeless masterpiece by @frictionalgames.bsky.social Over the years and repetitions it never lost even one ounce of its depth. Seal depicts a stylized Construct waving to Simon with scan lines distorting Simon's vision. Side inscription: 感谢.

I swear, the《賴古堂印譜》from 1667 has some of the most dramatic seals I ever saw. This one says "first among the sorrowful men all under heaven". Beautiful seal tho.

Ever since I first saw seals carved by Chen Guobin 陈国斌, I have been obsessed. How tf does he achieve this effect? And the way how deliberate his carving is, like this seal: it's off center both as a whole and as single characters, yet the full effect is still harmonious. #china #art #chenguobin

From the《賴古堂印譜》1667, based on the biography of Tao Hongjing in the Biographies of hermits chapter of The history of the Southern Dynasties by Li Yanshou: "[he read books by the ten thousands] and if he ever found anything he didn't know, a deep sense of shame overcame him". 😎

Hungarian artist Imre Baász (1941-1991) in 1977 illustrated Hungarian poet Endre Ady's (1877-1919) poem titled "Two kurucz [soldiers] talking". For the occasion he carved a seal, but it was created with the same aqua forte technique as the illustration itself. Beautiful! #art #poetry #baasz #ady

Almost midnight here and was planning to go to sleep, but discovered the calligraphy of Southern Song painter Chen Rong 陳容 (c. 1200–1266) and oh my...love at first sight! His writing seems so modern, it's gorgeous! Need more, much-much more! #china #history #calligraphy #art

Today I was learning about "set seals" 套印, aka "child and mother seals" 子母印 because they are a larger seal with a smaller seal inside. Large and small seals all have inscriptions: two, even three. Prominent from the Eastern Han all the way to Wei-Jin and Six dynasties. #china #history #seal #art

Seeing right wing gobshites whine about @allylouks.bsky.social thesis about the literary representation of smells and their social implications, and NOT OF THE SMELLS THEMSELVES, I might write something about the literary representation of the taste of ink in the 飲墨 "drinking ink" tradition.

So I ordered a Zhao Zhiqian 赵之谦 seal book off Amazon, but got refunded because turns out the listing was up, but they didn't have the book in warehouse. So then I took my money to AliExpress and ordered this seal book about Huang Mufu 黄牧甫.

This 17th century seal saying "sober and crazy" makes me feel so seen. 😂 Finally, someone who doesn't blame his insanity on alcohol. 😎 #china #history #carvedseal #sealcutting #mingdynasty #qingdynasty #sober #crazy

"A record of the Buddhist monasteries of Luoyang"《洛陽伽藍記》be wild like that sometimes. There follows a lengthy description of what he supposedly saw in the netherworld. #china #buddhism #yangxuanzhi #luoyang #netherworld

When Emperor Yao presented to the throne to Xu You, the latter ran to the hills and washed out his ears in the Ying river. Qao Fu, another sage, wanted to water his ox in the river, but lead it away complaining that Xu You contaminated the river.

利於人謂之巧,不利於人謂之拙。《墨子·魯問》 "Anything that benefits people is called skillful, and what doesn't is called inept" (Mozi - Lu's questions) Mulberry paper, seal script and red ink to make it look properly imperial.

Learning about Han military seals. These were often carved in the moment, very fast as ranks switched, some demoted, others promoted. Hence they were called 急就章 "haphazardly carved seals". I love their style, so natural, reminds me of contemporaries like Chen Guobin.
