Phage genomes are an pool of untapped potential that could be harnessed to create new genomic tools. IGI's @jenniferdoudna.bsky.social & Brady Cress @cresslab.bsky.social detail a new method for exploring phage genomes, out today in @naturemicrobiol.bsky.social. Read more: ow.ly/uucL50V77n0 🧪🧬🦠

We were proud to host Reps. @replsimon.bsky.social and @reptedlieu.bsky.social for a tour of the IGI and discussions on the #BiomedicalResearch we're doing with the support of funding from NIH! Here's a great article on the visit from the @ucberkeleyofficial.bsky.social news room: bit.ly/4gWtlpD 🧪🧬

Coming up tomorrow (Tuesday) at noon Pacific!

In February 1975, a landmark conference at #Asilomar brought together leading molecular biologists to assess the risks of recombinant DNA technology and establish self-governing research guidelines. Fifty years later, authors in Science reflect on the meeting’s impacts. (THREAD 🧵)

Emilie Stenmark of The Economist did a stellar job reporting on all major facets of CRISPR gene editing applications. I highly recommend this (and not because the IGI and our work on CRISPR cures and climate change is mentioned) - it's really great. www.economist.com/technology-q...

Glad to welcome Democratic Vice Chair @tedlieu.bsky.social to CA-12 today. We toured labs at @ucberkeleyofficial.bsky.social and discussed how the Trump administration's attacks on NIH funding endangers decades of leading research and scientific work.

Grateful to @replsimon.bsky.social & @reptedlieu.bsky.social for visiting IGI to learn how federal funding is critical to supporting cutting-edge science & medicine, as well as training future generations. Cutting science funding affects real families across the US. Read here: shorturl.at/8cqRh

Happy Birthday to the @innovativegenomics.bsky.social - which turned 10 years old this month! Learn more about the key achievements from the first 10 years of IGI's incredible #teamscience: innovativegenomics.org/news/igi-10-...

Coming up Tuesday at noon! Nigel Taylor on getting disease-resistant cassava to smallholder farmers in Africa. Join us in person at the IGIB or via Zoom! More info here: ow.ly/fE5Y50V3Q5T

1/2 This month, IGI held training courses in Delhi on using hashtag#CRISPR to edit crops, with sponsorship from the Gates Foundation! We learned a tremendous amount about the impactful Indian researchers developing new varieties of rice, maize, pulses, and mustard. Inspiring work!

We're celebrating our 10th anniversary this year and remembering some great moments from the past decade! In February 2022, IGI's Pam Ronald won the Wolf Prize in Agriculture for her “pioneering work on disease resistance and environmental stress tolerance in rice.” Read more: ow.ly/kAqe50UPW9s

We're celebrating our 10th anniversary this year and remembering some of the great moments from the past decade. #OTD in 2020, IGI's Jill Banfield revealed the existence of near-ubiquitous "huge phages" – a kind of virus that infects bacteria – in the journal Nature. Read more: ow.ly/1w2h50UPVQb

Happy #DarwinDay! During his travels in the Galápagos islands Charles Darwin – born #OTD in 1809 – observed finch-like birds who had different beak shapes. He hypothesized that the different birds had evolved from a single ancestral species, allowing them to access to different food sources.

At the IGI, we celebrate #WomenInSTEM today and everyday!
