The more I think about American Exceptionalism, and how it has decayed the brains of the American populace, the more sense it makes that everyone is going "who's going to save us?!" instead of instantly grinding the entire country to a halt. They count on a singular hero instead of each other.

This reads like the ending to one of those 50's stories where Superman acts really weird but in the end he has a convoluted explanation. "You see Jimmy, I erased my memory for 24 hours so I couldn't cheat at Jeopardy! That's why Luthor was able to trick me into stealing all the gold in Finland!"
