I don’t miss Saturday Night Live, which peaked in its first or second year. It was really only ever “live” on a handful of occasions: Elvis Costello and The Attractions doing Jimi on Lulu, “The Claudine Longet Invitational” (for which they were forced to apologise), and “A Limo for a Lame-O”. 5/7

For local stations, infomercials became easier and more lucrative; lower-tier cable networks followed suit. Post-Conan talk shows just lacked the allure of the way the Paar Tonight Show was described as being continually on the verge of collapse, and that was before there were competing shows. 4/7

Never before or since has channel flipping been so rewarding. Even intentionally bad content like USA Up All Night had a shimmering quality, a kind of communal acknowledgement of bad performance being entertaining. In my mind it runs parallel to viewing Cleveland’s ’90s indie theatre scene. 3/7

SCTV, music videos on Akron’s ABC affiliate until 3 a.m. or later, Dennis Miller (post-SNL and pre-FSB), one-offs like The T.V. Show? Those days are gone. Late night was the first place I viewed an ITC Classic, Randall and Hopkirk (Deceased) (under its US title My Partner the Ghost). 2/6
