New figures from Home Office today with some striking figures on asylum: - Asylum applications for 2024 are highest on record. - Decisions have doubled in final quarter of 2024 compared to quarter before. - Asylum backlog slowly coming down (7% fall between Sep and Dec 2024).

New stats out from the Home Office today... but what do they reveal? 🧵 TLDR: - Asylum backlog down 7% - Number of people in hotels slightly higher - Small boat arrivals increased by 25% in 2024 - Sharp fall in health and care worker visas

Went on Sky News today to talk about BP's decision to roll back on their renewables commitments - on the day that @thecccuk.bsky.social published their 7th Carbon Budget which clearly lays out how cutting emissions and taking action now can cut energy bills & raise living standards

🟢 Is an industrial strategy alone enough to deliver long term energy security? An industrial strategy is vital to boosting the domestic supply chain, which is a huge part of guaranteeing our energy security says @praneshippr.bsky.social at the DESNZ Committee. www.youtube.com/watch?v=_adE...

BP's decision to ramp up oil and gas production and slash spending on low-carbon energy is a massive step in the wrong direction. Renewables are the future and smart businesses see that. 📺 #ICYMI: @msingerhobbs.bsky.social on Sky News 👇

The Climate Change Committee’s advice on the Seventh Carbon Budget is out today. What does it say about surface transport? Quick 🧵

Join us on 5 March 2025 from 3.30pm to 6:00pm to find out more about think tanks, what it’s like to work for one and what careers the sector can offer.

The government is right to boost defence spending—global threats are growing. But cutting the aid budget weakens UK influence. When we help countries, we build alliances. If we withdraw, China & Russia will step in. 📺 #ICYMI: @harryqp.bsky.social on BBC News 👇

Should the prime minister retaliate if tariffs were imposed on the UK by the American president? 📺 We can't rule out retaliatory tariffs says @marleymorris.bsky.social at the Business and Trade Committee 👇 www.youtube.com/watch?v=O4Wq...

The world has changed since Labour took office. With defence spending set to rise beyond 2.5%, the government should re-consider whether its commitments on spending and tax are fit for the future. @harryqp.bsky.social 👇

Immediate action on household costs can help sustain public support for the rapid expansion of clean energy. The government should consider rebalancing costs between bills and taxation and review how Ofgem calculates the energy price cap. @samalvis.bsky.social 👇

The Scottish government has published its Draft Just Transition Plan for Transport in Scotland. The consultation closes on 19th May. Pleased to see a few @ippr.bsky.social reports used to inform this plan.

I've had my head artificially widened (see attached) to fit in more policy knowledge and have now started as Head of Health at the @ippr.bsky.social! We'll soon be embarking on an exciting programme of work, building on the brilliant Commission on Health and Prosperity. Watch this space! 👀

“Businesses can and should do more” says IPPR's Seb Rees. Health Secretary @rthonwesstreeting.bsky.social's plan to strengthen employers' role in preventive healthcare is key to reducing economic inactivity and easing pressure on the NHS. www.ft.com/content/8acd...

V good interview with the IPPR’s @harryqp.bsky.social in the new statesman. In the current climate, government caution would be riskier than boldness. www.newstatesman.com/politics/202...

Contrary to what the FSB is saying, our polling finds that most employers believe that the government’s policies will have a positive effect on productivity and investment, as well as on the profitability of their business. 📻 @harryqp.bsky.social on LBC 👇

Very humbled to be profiled by @rmcunliffe.bsky.social - but the real stars are my team. A big moment for progressives but we @ippr.bsky.social are up for the challenge.

“Our job is to make sure progressives have answers that are bold enough” A dispatch from think tank land from me this week, after I sat down with Harry Quilter-Pinner from @ippr.bsky.social to discuss rewiring the UK economy (and D:Ream vs. REM) www.newstatesman.com/politics/202...

📣 New Op-Ed in @tesmagazine.bsky.social from Who is Losing Learning? Solution Council member, the Bishop of Dover. Too many children from disadvantaged backgrounds are being denied access to top-performing schools, but this doesn't have to be the case. Read it here: tinyurl.com/bdhpheyu

Great to see so many IPPR alumni and our new executive director, @harryqp.bsky.social, included in this list of the key people shaping the government’s 10-Year Health Plan. www.hsj.co.uk/policy-and-r...

Today’s rise in inflation was expected and should be no cause for alarm, says @georgedibb.bsky.social. The government’s plan of supporting investment, wages, workers' rights, and long-term stability is the right one. Today's data is no reason to change course.

We don't need to rip up the planning system to build 1.5 million new homes. Thousands of homes are granted planning permission every year but never get built. The gov should consider measures to force developers to build, or face sanctions. Read more: www.ippr.org/articles/str...

Market driven house-building is broken, and won’t deliver the 1.5 million homes the government has promised. Strategic planning at national, regional and sub-regional levels will be essential. Find out more here: https://www.ippr.org/articles/strategic-planning-for-green-prosperity

A significant share of planning permissions granted in 2021 never got built: 🏗️ 59% in the North West 🏗️ 46% in the North East 🏗️ 46% in Yorkshire & the Humber Why? @msingerhobbs.bsky.social @ippr.bsky.social's new report, out today, explores the issue ⤵️

Many blame the planning system for the UK's housing crisis, but the bigger issue lies with developers. Too often, they get permission but don’t build—waiting to sell at a higher price or keep supply low to prop up house prices. Read our new report here: www.ippr.org/articles/str...

Important report on the planning system from @msingerhobbs.bsky.social Too many homes are being built that lack good transport links and lock in costly car dependence. We need more and better planning to guide development and ensure homes and infrastructure are built in the right places.

Planning is complex and poorly understood. While every government since 2010 has promised to ‘rip up red tape’, progress on housebuilding has remained broadly stable since the 1990s. Find out more in our new report here: https://www.ippr.org/articles/strategic-planning-for-green-prosperity

🧱 | NEW REPORT: Instead of stripping back planning regulations to 'get Britain building,' this new report from @msingerhobbs.bsky.social argues we need a stronger, better resourced, planning system.

Slowly but surely, the economy is growing. The pessimism post-budget seems to have been overplayed as firms prepared for the pain of higher taxes but couldn’t yet see the benefits of increased spending. The government needs stick to its guns says @praneshippr.bsky.social.

Can expanding Heathrow with a third runway boost growth and not harm the environment? 📺 @msingerhobbs.bsky.social shares her scepticism on BBC News 👇

🗣️ "There are two problems in UK political finance. One is about the source of the funding and the other one is about the size of the funding" Great to have @ippr.bsky.social's Parth Patel backing our calls for political finance reform to MPs at last week's HCLG Committee evidence session.

NEW: As world leaders gather for the Paris AI Summit, I hope we're reaching a turning point, towards a "new politics of AI". Politicians should not just accelerate AI, but they also need to actively steer it towards social good. (1/8)

Sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) is back in the news. Before booking flights, there are 3 questions we need to ask: 1. Is it actually effective at reducing emissions? 2. If it IS effective, where/how should we produce it? 3. If 1 and 2 are sorted, are they enough to offset increases in air travel?

Spoke to @oliviarudgard.bsky.social about why the UK has pushed its NDC on time, when other countries are delaying. It's not to be 'seen as a leader' but to encourage other countries that it is possible and still worth putting on your electoral platform @ippr.bsky.social

Looks like a good role ⬇️🤭
