Six weeks ago, ICE agents detained Tufts student Rumeysa Ozturk solely for writing an op-ed supporting Palestinian rights. Today, a federal judge ordered her release, stating that her detention "chills the speech of millions in this country who are not citizens." This is a win. Free them all.

NEW: The Xinka people have issued a decision against the reopening of a Canadian-owned mine in Guatemala, stating that the project would condemn them to "disappear as a people." Pan American Silver must respect this decision. Statement from @earthworks.bsky.social:

The 1899 Newsboys strike that halted NYC newspaper distribution for weeks was led by children. The 1938 Pecan Shellers' Strike, one of the largest in Texas history, was led by 22-year-old Emma Tenayuca. Young workers have always played a critical role in the labor movement. They should keep it up.

While most government agencies are either under siege or fear that they will be so soon, the unaccountable Pentagon — and the revenues of major weapons contractors that receive much of its fortune — have barely been touched.

World Central Kitchen has run out of food to serve in Gaza. Its bakery ("recently the last working bakery in Gaza") is out of flour. There are 100,000+ tons of food in staging areas within driving distance of Gaza, and Israel refuses to let them in wck.org/news/gaza-up...

NEW: The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) helps to both predict hurricanes and repair their damage. This year, Trump has fired thousands of its workers. With summer approaching, it’s not too late to protect those federal workers still defending our communities from hurricanes.

When Massachusetts residents passed a new tax on income over $1 million in 2022, critics claimed it would drive the wealthy away. Instead, IPS scholar @ocampomar.bsky.social found that the state now has MORE millionaires — and an extra $2.46 billion raised by the tax. Mike Deehan in @axios.com:

🎙️ EVENT: Responding to the planetary polycrisis will require intentional thinking on the balance between humans and nature. TOMORROW, join IPS scholar @basavsen.bsky.social and Dr. Madhulika Banerjee for a unique discussion on this pluriversal knowledge. Register:

At a time when bipartisan agreement is rare, sixteen Republicans so far have joined Democrats on resolutions to prevent Trump and Musk’s plans to privatize the USPS. We can all agree: Keep our postal service strong and public. IPS scholar @sarahanderson.bsky.social in @inequality.org:

NEW: For young workers, unions model what a more democratic future could look like. If we truly seek a society of, by, and for the people, it has to start where people spend most of their time – on the job. A.J. Schumann in @inequality.org:

🎙️ EVENT: 50 years after the end of the U.S. war in Vietnam, FIRE AND RAIN offers a look at how wartime decisions were made — and influenced by a massive anti-war movement. THURSDAY, IPS scholar Phyllis Bennis will interview Carolyn Woods Eisenberg on her renowned book. Register in person or online:

Without Head Start, the nearly 800,000 children and pregnant people enrolled in the program would lose access to stable, high-quality child care and early education, damaging countless families and futures. We must fight to save Head Start. @scschmit.bsky.social of @clasp.org:

🎙️ ONLINE TRAINING: Rural America is often overlooked by progressive groups in the U.S. — but reaching these communities is a critical step toward building a sustainable, equitable future. On Thursday, 5/8, join IPS and @pplsaction.bsky.social for a unique training on effective outreach. REGISTER:

Are more tax breaks for Jeff Bezos and other billionaires worth more than SNAP and Medicaid? @sarahanderson.bsky.social of @ips-dc.org at the Moral Mondays at the Capitol rally with Bishop Barber

Carbon capture & storage and nuclear energy are polluting, expensive, infeasible tech that only enable more pollution. While promoting these scams, Trump is making every effort to set back serious fossil fuel alternatives: Wind and solar energy. IPS scholar @basavsen.bsky.social writes:

NEW: While Trump's reckless tariffs are set to cost families thousands(!) more per year, he quietly carved out exceptions for metals and minerals that Elon Musk and other corporate manufacturers need. IPS scholar @petercerto.bsky.social writes:

From France to the UK to the Philippines to Japan, thousands upon thousands of workers worldwide are standing up today with one demand: Invest in people, not billionaires. #MayDay

NEW: In 100 days, President Trump, who campaigned as a working-class champion, has: - Gutted worker rights, - Opposed a minimum wage hike, and - Fired 121,000+ federal workers. Workers deserve better than this billionaire-backed betrayal. @sarahanderson.bsky.social in @inequality.org: #MayDay

This #InternationalWorkersDay, the NLRB is under attack by a billionaire-backed administration. While we defend the agency, we also must get creative in finding new avenues to organize workers. In @inequality.org, Maria Esch of @cwd-asu.bsky.social provides three:

While looking to fund massive tax breaks for corporations and the rich, Trump and the GOP majority in Congress are proposing denying free and reduced school meals to 12 million children. Feeding billionaire greed is waste. Feeding children isn't.

The Trump admin is censoring scientific information, ripping away funding for scientific research, and firing government scientists. Trump's Earth Day claim that his administration “follows science" is a profound, dangerous lie. IPS scholar @basavsen.bsky.social:

NEW: SNAP helps over 40 MILLION Americans access food. Its rate of fraud is just 1% — but Trump and allies still want to slash it to fund tax cuts for the rich. "They all took an oath to serve us," writes Kentucky mother Tania Whitfield, whose family relies on SNAP. "Instead, they’re betraying us."

"Between 2018 and 2024, we estimate that Jassy saved roughly $6.6 million from this rate reduction. That amount could’ve covered annual child care costs for more than 600 families." @sarahanderson.bsky.social of @ips-dc.org and @inequality.org explains 👇 www.laprogressive.com/economic-equ...

NEW: Biden’s Labor Department set a federal rule making 4 million workers eligible for overtime pay. If Trump doesn’t defend the rule by May 6, raises for millions will disappear. It’s simple, write two former members of that department: If Trump really values workers, he’ll protect their pay.

NEW: Two years after MA passed its "millionaires tax," some claim that it's pushed rich taxpayers to leave. Instead, IPS @inequality.org scholar @ocampomar.bsky.social found that now, the state has MORE millionaires — and much more funding for public goods. Michael P. Norton in @bostonglobe.com:

NEW: If Amazon hadn't used credits and loopholes to avoid the 21% statutory corporate tax rate from 2018-2021, the company's federal tax bill would have been $12.5 BILLION higher. We need to un-rig our taxes. More from IPS, @powerswitchaction.org, and @athenaforall.bsky.social in @commondreams.org:

The top marginal tax rate for income from labor is 37%. The top rate on long-term capital gains — like Bezos selling Amazon stocks — is just 20%. Income from working a job shouldn’t be taxed more than income from the rich selling assets. End the capital gains double standard.

NEW: No, states taxing the rich doesn't make them move away — instead, it expands wealth and basic services for everyone. New data and analysis from IPS @inequality.org scholar @ocampomar.bsky.social with the State Revenue Alliance uncovers a wealth of potential for states to tax the rich:

I have been using @ips-dc.org Executive Excess reports for decades to teach my students to be more ethical #HR professionals. More of us should pay attention to their research…

Reminder that billionaires don’t hire workers out of generosity. They do it because, without workers, there would be no profits for them to take home. Workers don’t need billionaires. Billionaires need workers.

“My husband and I wait in line for hours at the food pantry every Monday while Amazon's executives make millions off our labor. They pay nearly nothing in taxes, diverting our public resources for their private gain."

NEW: In 2024, Amazon CEO Andrew Jassy contributed just 0.4% of his taxable pay to Social Security, while the median Amazon worker contributed 6.2% of theirs. Those who have less shouldn’t have to pay more. Lift the Social Security wage cap.

Let's not forget: Republicans in Congress are proposing $86 billion MORE in spending each year for war, weapons, and deportations.

“The Trump administration doxxed an American citizen, endangering her and her children. This is completely unacceptable and flat-out wrong.”

NEW: There are mountains of data on the benefits of immigration. At the end of the day, we shouldn't need it, writes IPS scholar Meredith Lehman. "It seems everyone has become so preoccupied arguing over the minutiae of immigration that they’ve missed the most essential point: We are neighbors."

NEW: U.S. leaders now bombing Yemen are ignoring the path that already achieved an end to Houthi attacks on trade ships — the Israel-Hamas ceasefire. "The Houthis had agreed to stop fighting and the U.S. refused to take 'yes' for an answer." Listen to IPS scholar Khury Petersen-Smith on @kpfa.org:

🎙️ TONIGHT: 50 years after the end of the American War in Vietnam, @busboysandpoets.bsky.social is hosting a unique discussion with Vietnamese poet and novelist Nguyễn Phan Quế Mai and Vietnam veteran Wayne Karlin, moderated by renowned poet E. Ethelbert Miller. Spots still available, register now:

Compared to Bezos, the average Amazon worker also pays a MUCH larger share of their paycheck towards things like social security -- despite only earning $37K per year.

NEW: Jeff Bezos has saved $6.2 BILLION from the discounted capital gains tax rate since the 2017 tax reform. As Congress pushes MORE corporate tax giveaways, the IPS @inequality.org team, @powerswitchaction.org, and @athenaforall.bsky.social expose how Amazon execs have been raking it in. REPORT:

We partnered with @ips-dc.org & @athenaforall.bsky.social to research how Amazon and its top execs have enriched themselves by exploiting tax loopholes. Now, they're aligning with Trump and autocracy in a bid to make themselves even richer. www.powerswitchaction.org/resources/am...

Millions of Americans hitting the streets to push back against Trump's cruel policies is the first step to a successful resistance, @pplsaction.bsky.social director @ariassulma.bsky.social writes. The next step is to for all of us to talk to our friends, join local groups, and get organized.

On a warming planet, cross-border migration will rise. Further militarizing our borders is a path to damaging communities and the planet — endangering us all. The solution is to demilitarize and strengthen people's freedom to move and stay. #EarthDay 🌎
