If one is discouraged by an avalanche of news, one can look at a newspaper from, say, 1913 and wonder about the avalanche of stories on a page in tiny yet pretty typefaces.

One of my tools as a critic had been a Twitter list called, "Top Journalism Linkers." Designed so that I could survey the space. It was the first thing I read in the morning. When I left it had 6.8K users. Over the weekend I rebuilt it for Bluesky. You can subscribe. bsky.app/profile/jayr...

Poland was supposed to be the firewall against Putin grabbing chunks of Europe?

I learned about Musk's "zero budget" method: you cut all payments and later reinstate the ones deemed necessary. This is part of his real love for speed, going fast. He's nearly killed people in cars this way. Something I don't really understand but can see: love of speeding. Faster, not cheaper.

Thinking about this: Musk is taking a machete to the civil service. David Sacks wants to shanghai Zelensky. They split the job, with Musk weakening the domestic U.S. & Sacks slashing & burning the new Congo: Ukraine. 💰💰💰💰💰

Wow, @paulkrugman.substack.com.web.brid.gy too sees Ukraine as the new Congo.

I wonder what Marco Rubio's Miami relatives who fled Russophile Cuba think of him caving to Russian demands.

I see a lot of schadenfreude from laid-off tech workers pleased that federal workers are also getting laid off. Techcrunch crunched some of the laid-off tech worker numbers. Note that it is a tech CEO accustomed to laying off many workers wielding the hatchet. techcrunch.com/2025/02/13/t...

The fact that the cofounder of Airbnb now goes to work for DOGE chimes with my feeling that software development has plateaud and Silicon Valley entrepreneurs are now aiming to live at the expense of taxpayers to support their lavish lifestyles.

After hearing JD Vance state that with a change of the party in power EVERYONE in government should be replaced, I posted as much & someone commented that it would be a return to the patronage system, which failed, leading to the Pendleton Civil Service Act in 1883. www.archives.gov/milestone-do...

Pickleball was canceled so I just rode my bike under the train underpass in Nashville, the train that no one here can ride because it's just for stuff.

I don't know whose decision it was to include a book of Paul Éluard's poems in the Frist museum gift shop in Nashville. Nice move.

Happy Valentine's Day, much love to you all, but especially to the WeGo driver that saw me running to catch the bus and waited for me. Now *that's* love. ♥️

The gulf between those who believe RFKJr will kill everyone & those who believe RFKJr will save everyone is pretty big. I admit to being curious how this one plays out.

Here you go: my new novel, The Payback, is about a Black mall employee who realizes the only way she’s ever paying her student loans back is by doing a heist against her student loan company with her mall employee friends, you can preorder here: kashanacauley.com

Moon in Washington State during the kid's commute to the office today.

I updated my CV. Link in my profile. Retirement? What retirement?

Moon setting in the Puget Sound today. Photo by A.I. (not AI) during her commute to the office.

The USSR had crumbled, we had scientists from the Academy of Sciences fleeing to the U.S. to publish & find jobs, book publishing was in denial about the internet, my boss wanted to publish maps. Don't remember what made me call Saul Cohen's office but he did invite me for a chat

Good podcast ep with Michael Lewis. About sports betting and -- after the halftime -- the risks of a governmentless country. pca.st/episode/9a75...

Musk has rooted the computers that run the world economy.

@karaswisher.bsky.social Did some of the bros (and gals) seeking to destroy the fed gov not know that U.S. gov is pretty transparent? www.usaspending.gov

"We need to have many competitions amonst each other all the time" -- quote from above-quoted podcast ep. Palantir, unsurprisingly, has a Girardian culture. Peter Thiel's Thiel Foundation gives money for research into René Girard's ideas: www.thielfoundation.org

Oh wow, it was Palantir who built the supply chain for Operation Warp Speed delivering Covid 19 vaccines. So why are Musk & RFK Jr bros & gals blaming Fauci instead of Peter Thiel? At about minute 29: pca.st/episode/e90e...

Greystar, which has so many new apartment buildings in Nashville, and a class-action lawsuit for fixing rents and other shenanigans, is selling its San Diego building near the Padres stadium at a big loss.
