It was grimly inevitable that this thread would eventually devolve into people claiming we need the experts because the public is too stupid to have an opinion. This is the apotheosis of the point Gove was making: that people are using quangos to ram through policies the public opposes.

To steel man gives point a little more, the conceit here was really that all kinds of experts are the same. No one really thinks you should overrule a civil engineer, but there are not really ‘experts’ in say sentencing criminals and it’s bizarre for a government to defer on that topic.
