Universities are facing the largest (extremely partisan) attack on their funding model in the modern era and we’re still writing pieces like this? Feels like fighting the last war. Vanderbilt (whose provost is a co-author of this opinion piece) is slashing their grad programs.

@biblioracle.bsky.social and his brother tackle the "Dear Colleague" letter latest in "Academic Freedom on the Line": "those who choose to fight will end up strengthening both their own institution as well as the rule of law" @aaup.bsky.social academicfreedomontheline.substack.com/p/the-worst-...

“For us, equity wasn’t an abstract idea. It was about survival.”

“What do we want?” “Evidence based science!” When do we want it?” “Now…or after peer review!!” @aaup.bsky.social

@aftunion.bsky.social local president reminding us that those who have worked in public schools in cities like New Haven have always been under attack by neoliberal and right-wing monsters like Trump and Musk. It’s now coming for HE.

Great showing in New Haven @aaup.bsky.social HANDS OFF our research!!

Everyone in CT, Labor4HigherEd @aaup.bsky.social is organizing a rally in New Haven today @ 5:15 come and demand HANDS OFF OUR HEALTHCARE! HANDS OFF OUR RESEARCH! HANDS OFF OUR JOBS!! @wesleyanaaup.bsky.social @uconnaaup.bsky.social

Yup. A manufactured moral panic through and through. Stuart Hall had a lot to say about how moral panics over petty street crime in London made Thatcher's neoliberal policies possible. Now it's a moral panic over CRT, DEI, etc that's making plutocracy-in-the-name-of-free-speech palatable.

Yale @aaup.bsky.social rocks!!

Watch and share!

Yes, we truly sink or swim together. It's been moving to see groups like @higheredlabor.bsky.social using a clear message of solidarity that connects the struggles we're facing in higher ed to the onslaught against K-12 and pre-K, as @jessjtang.bsky.social does so well here youtu.be/TpEpofi7lWA?...

Neoliberalism/libertarianism/national conservatism in a single comic. Brought to you by the #AtlasNetwork

We are living in an upside down reality in which efforts to remedy racial injustice are now considered racist by the Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights. 😡 www.ed.gov/media/docume...

"Trump’s campaign to quash diverse perspectives and free speech is just beginning. Harvard is helping him. I pray other universities don’t." - Jonathan Feingold, fellow at the AAUP's Center for the Defense of Academic Freedom. thehill.com/opinion/5141...

Must read by @alicesperi.bsky.social @theguardian.com about organized attacks on faculty research. @bletiecq.bsky.social quoted: “We are totally under attack...we’re like sitting ducks.” We need strength and solidarity. Keep doing the good work, and fight back. www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025...

Great piece by @jpygold.bsky.social about Harvard's adoption of IHRA definition of antisemitism. "What stops Trump from...extending similar protections to white supremacists...for some white Americans, white supremacy and Nazism is part of their White identity?" thehill.com/opinion/5141...

@biblioracle.bsky.social has a great interview w/ @aaup.bsky.social CDAF fellow Demetri Morgan. Advice for how gov. boards should approach the current moment. A university's "reason for being emanates from its mission, not laws and policies." academicfreedomontheline.substack.com/p/every-gene...

For those in Ohio, @penamerica.bsky.social @jeremycyoung.bsky.social have created helpful resources for fighting back against SB 1/HB 6--aka the full-frontal attack on higher education. Here's the tool kit pen.org/dont-censor-...

@historians.org wrote a great letter to Trump condemning the dismissal of the US Archivist. "Democracy rests on the rule of law. And the history of the United States rests on unfettered access to the archival record." www.historians.org/news/aha-sen...

Trump is signing some EOs "I have hereunto set my hand this third day of February, in the year of our Lord two thousand twenty-five, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and forty-ninth." Using 1776 as a measure of time, alongside the birth of Christ...

The American Association of University Professors is organizing a concerted response to the NIH/NSF/OMB funding pause as it impacts our intellectual pursuits. 🧪 They have a form where scholars, particularly those who are in unions, can list impacts anonymously: airtable.com/appMQQqeVbCY...

I *just saw this on Bradley Impact Fund website (donor-advised fund for conservatives): "Fighting back against the Left isn’t a battle won overnight. An investment in FEHE is about winning the battle of ideas over the long term." www.bradleyimpactfund.org/blog/informe... Read our story on FEHE:

the wild thing is that chris rufo has explicitly said this!

Just listened to "Posting Through It" reboot with @jaredlholt.bsky.social and @michaelehayden.bsky.social. Few reporters have covered the radical Right as well as these 2. This podcast is a welcome corrective to the failure of most media coverage. Thanks! postthroughit.substack.com/p/001-and-we...

Seriously, if you read only *one* thing today about the shame of failing to hold Trump accountable for the horrors of January 6, make it this piece from @donmoyn.bsky.social. He reminds us of all the cowards, lest we forget. Starting w/GOP leaders. donmoynihan.substack.com/p/jan-6-and-...

RIP Rickey Henderson. Most stolen bases (1406) and runs scored (2295) in MLB history. Untouchable records. And done with a flare that was equally epic.

Who is the National Association of Scholars? Their latest email tells you everything: "Do you want to avoid taxes on your charitable gifts and bolster the walls of Western civilization against the barbarians?" I talk about NAS in "Manufacturing Backlash." www.aaup.org/file/Manufac...

Great piece by Ilana Gerson at Academe Blog thinking about defending academic freedom as part of a larger struggle for "intellectual freedom in all workplaces." We are all embodied experts in our own workplaces. And some of us work in the university. @aaup.bsky.social academeblog.org/2024/12/18/i...

Looks like 6 UNC Trustees--the same board that imposed the School of Civic Life and Leadership--got caught trying to influence the admissions process. Another case of "Affirmative action for me, but not for thee..." @aaup www.theassemblync.com/education/hi...

Exactly as intended: Create a world that combines existing structures of discrimination in all spheres of life with “race-blind” and “gender-neutral” selection processes (like hiring and admission practices) that pretend those structures don’t exist. Then call the result “meritocracy.”

Surgical takedown of the right-wing moral panic about DEI statements. #CLC defends @aaup.bsky.social position that faculty should govern how faculty assess and evaluate each other, and they might conclude that DEI statements are a useful tool. @lpeproject.bsky.social lpeproject.org/blog/why-aca...
