University funding can be pretty opaque, even to current students, so there's a lot of things that people don't realize. Having international students is vital for many colleges, particularly in less-populated states. Humanities departments often subsidize other parts of the school. Et cetera.

Earlier this spring, me and 20-odd other people spent 10 weeks thinking and talking about The Browser as a place that is ALREADY A GAME ENGINE at @sfpc-study.bsky.social Well, we made some freak web games - and you can play them at LARPA in Brooklyn next week. Come through!!

AAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHH

I've built several projects using Perseus Digital Library data, including a NaNoGenMo novel, so this hits pretty close to home.

DOGE terminated our current NEH grant with which we were developing a next generation Perseus. Luckily, much of the work has been done. We should be able to get much, though not all, of the work that we had planned done. The backend is fairly solid and results should appear on the front end soon.

An E-bike battery burned my house down on the first day of GDC. Seeking mutual aid from financially stable colleagues. gofund.me/47306b15

relate to this bit specifically. sometimes something is not that hard to implement, but *is* hard to explain & pitch. if you want that stuff to happen, you gotta have a designer with their hands directly on the material, and trust them to try stuff without getting buy-in first.

Part 1/4 of The Dwarf Fortress documentary is out now!

Loving a detail of Jean-Baptiste Siraudin’s talk on designing Sabaac, where screenshots/videos have a list of other devs who contributed to that piece of work ❤️

Hey folks. I have another survey I'd like to get responses for, but I'm *only looking for game developers* to respond. Most people qualify, whether you enter game jams, release free experimental art on itch.io, or make AAA blockbusters - but it's not a general public thing forms.gle/uQydeogCnfkB...

I Released a Game! (two months ago) While everyone is at GDC I was busy finishing up some final touches and a blog for my game "Telegrams from the Choir Train" bjarke.it/article/i-re... I explain why I think of this game as a "communal tamagotchi".

I won't be at GDC this year but I still have some cool character tech I can show off even if I can't show off the hyper current stuff yet Tracks in Snow is my post apocalyptic road trip yuri VN where you perform a character instead of choosing dialogue options quakefultales.itch.io/tracks-in-sn...

I'm going to be adjacent to GDC this year; let me know if you want to meet up and talk procedural generation, generativity, design, or the current thing you're excited about.

It's closing because the UK has introduced a law that makes it impossible for a lot of digital community spaces to remain operational any more. So it's just shutting down. The law has kind of gone underdiscussed, I feel like, it's having quite a wide impact. www.gamesindustry.biz/20-year-old-...

I haven't played UD in ~11 years, but still think of it about once a month. Sad to see it go, it was a great example of how community can use severely limited tools to generate stories. RIP to those months RPing as a fire brigade operated by the 7 vices! Reason why it's turned off is also wild.

Hello! I have a little survey about procedural generation and games. No expert knowledge required - it's for anyone to take and fill in. It'll take about 5 minutes to complete. RTs appreciated! forms.gle/AN4zFDxodQyx...

A wild Catacomb Kids update appears! It's a bunch of bug fixes! store.steampowered.com/news/app/315...

Playing with very basic parallax backgrounds. I'm so happy that overdraw is less of an issue on modern hardware. Volumetric clouds are just 5 layers of the same wispy cloud image over each other right?

It's ready! Announcing the follow-up to 2021's Overboard! EXPELLED! We are so excited to have people play this one. It's 1922. It's a boarding school. There are japes. There's attempted murder. There are dolphins. God and the Devil and everything to play for. Check out the trailer below:

We published this year's Polaris game design papers. Some of the best game design writing for senior designers on the entire planet. Our team worked on designing collective decision making systems. polarisgamedesign.com/2024/how-to-... #gamedesign #gamedevelopment

If you need a timeline cleanser here’s a bunch of scribbly images I made tonight very fast with cheap markers Give yourself permission to make art, fast or slow, very badly and with pride and carelessness

ANNOUNCEMENT! my game is releasing on Monday! "Telegrams from the Choir Train" is an experimental narrative game about managing freight through a telegraph wired to frail binary Gods. It is played entirely inside YOUR DISCORD SERVER Releasing Monday January 20th! bjeck.github.io/CRC-RITU/ind...

I wish people would post more links to interesting things I feel like Twitter and LinkedIn and Instagram and TikTok have pushed a lot of people out of the habit of doing that, by penalizing shared links in the various "algorithms" Bluesky doesn't have that misfeature, thankfully!

My paper "Archaeological Gameworld Affordances" has been accepted to #CHI2025! It presents a new theory for how players form interpretations of environmental storytelling, based on a large-scale empirical study. More to come! See you in Yokohama!

got frustrated with how hard it was to find old level design talks, so I started a "recommended talks" page on the level design book book.leveldesignbook.com/appendix/res... (still many talks missing, but it's a start)

New project! The Visible Zorker: a toy which lets you explore Zork 1 *and* the source code that makes it go. An exercise in making software transparent. eblong.com/infocom/visi... A post about how and why I did this: blog.zarfhome.com/2025/01/the-... Enjoy!

if you like qud but don't know a lot about what a traditional roguelike is and want an intro to that world you should both listen to roguelike radio and try out dungeonmans!
