My @peculiarbookclub.bsky.social YouTube show last night was such fun! Thanks, everyone who came out for the live show! Recording below: monsters past & present; fun, utopian monsters, too. Lots for #StarTrek #TNG fans! 1/3 💙📚 🧪 🗃 #medieval #earlymodern #histsci #histmed #18thC #politics #HAMH

My interview on 2 Complicated 4 History, on everything from astrobiology to current affairs, is now on YouTube as well as Apple and Spotify. 💙📚 🧪🗃 #earlymodern #histsci #histmed #18thCentury #politics #HAMH youtu.be/PaByiiRovuE?...

"She was always interested in history, she says — particularly the Civil War and the westward expansion of the country." I would like to extend an invitation to Lindsey Halligan to come on my newsletter platform to talk about her interest in the Civil War. 😆😂 www.washingtonpost.com/style/power/...

Finally leveling up our YouTube channel. Check out our trailer here: youtu.be/h1LrmkOaNZA

🧵 Here is Earth's rotation realized in an unusual way: using a camera scanning the landscape of Tivoli, Namibia, Bartosz Wojczyński focused on the sky. He created a timelapse spanning 24 h that has a focal point in the sky rather than on the ground. ➡️ apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap20070... 🔭 🧪 #galactic

Closing in on 50k! Who's gonna help push me over?

I spoke with @isaacsloftus.bsky.social and @lynnprobbins.bsky.social on 2 Complicated 4 History about HUMANS: A MONSTROUS HISTORY from @ucpress.bsky.social. Apple podcast link: podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/2... 💙📚 🧪🗃 #ancient #medieval #earlymodern #histsci #histmed #18thCentury #politics #HAMH

Hi, I’m autistic and I’m the mayor of my city.

I'm a lawyer and this is correct. Straight line of "blatantly illegal constitutional end-runs to violate human rights" from Iran–Contra to Gitmo to CECOT paved by the only consequences the perpetrators suffering being more money, more power, and more prestige.

3 days ago RFK Jr. told the CDC to stop recommending water fluoridation, claiming it was a neurotoxin (this is a lie). Turns out he also just eliminated the CDC’s entire Lead Program, and now lead poisoned children in Milwaukee are just on their own. Lead IS a neurotoxin and harms brain development

the unholy scream I just let out, the NEH funded my work for a whole year. apps.neh.gov/publicquery/...

The important thing here is that some brave people said NO and they WALKED AWAY

The next episode of my podcast is going to be fun! Especially for you Jane Austen fans!

UPDATE: ICE is wildly unconcerned about where this man is and no one will tell me, his registered attorney. The universal answer so far is "let's wait and see where he ends up." This is deeply off. We would have more rights at this point if UPS had lost a pair of shoes I'd just bought from Zappos

Good news--NEH's Edsitement is backed up already! I was concerned that backups wouldn't include the many pdf's linked to the lesson plans, but the ones I tested work. The direct link to the archived version of Edsitement is wayback.archive-it.org/5474/2024112...

Speaking as the parent of the 2-year-old: Critical Support to Comrade Rachel

Not to put too a fine point on it, but Musk and his ilk also omit a crucial feature of Rome in the 1st century BCE: two generations of civil war and mob violence takes a toll on populations and family structures

The Trump administration illegally deported this Maryland father, who was here legally, by "accident" to El Salvador and now they have no way of getting him back. Whoever is responsible for this should be held criminally liable for destroying this person's life. www.theatlantic.com/politics/arc...

Arthur Conan Doyle reposting AI pics as “proof” of fairies

The administration is removing phone support for Soc Security recipients. Making it more difficult for seniors to get their checks. It’s a back door way to cut SS benefits. Horrific. If you know anyone who is impacted, please help them get online to get their benefits approved

“Today’s gun culture is consumerist, government-phobic, & individualist. In contrast, early America’s gun culture was utilitarian, government-led, & collective.” Consequential and hard won history - good 🧵🗃️

One of the most memorable experiences of my undergraduate days was hearing from and meeting Albert Smith, Navajo Code Talker. This is infuriating.

One problem with the idea of reserving due process for law-abiding people is that due process is how we figure out which people are law-abiding.

If you were one of the many, many people who doubted Imane Khelif's eligibility to box last summer, take a minute to reflect on why you believed that disinformation campaign and how you can avoid falling for the next one.

Individual Border Patrol agents knew they were doing this, and a supervisor signed off on it.

In a shocking turn of events, many of the people who said they wanted "free speech" actually just wanted to be the ones in charge of which speech is free.

I’d like to announce my forthcoming US history book, covering a decisive but tumultuous era in that country’s history, titled “The trade policies of the United States: 10:30 am to 1:30 pm on Friday, March 7, 2025” It will be 400 pages.

Oh I'm sorry but @kathleenduval.bsky.social is amazing and just did A THING. Congratulations Kathleen!!!!!!!! (Also, go read one of her books. Read Native Nations. Or read Independence Lost. Or read The Native Ground. They're all spellbinding. Do this now.)

I’m thrilled to share that Native Nations has won the Bancroft Prize www.nytimes.com/2025/03/05/a...

A team of archivists has recreated the pre-Trump CDC website as a live, easy-to-navigate website that should be indexed by Google. The team is hosting it in Europe. Cool project that is sadly necessary: www.404media.co/archivists-r...

A lethal virus. The smallpox vaccine, required by Geo. Washington of the Continental Army, embraced by Abigail Adams for her children, the work of generations (inc man enslaved in 17th c Boston, Onesimus). Some of the vaccine certificates @jcblibrary.bsky.social are so moving-- ppl treasured them.

NEW SEASON OF 2 Complicated 4 History drops tomorrow! Everywhere you get podcasts! @lynnprobbins.bsky.social & @isaacsloftus.bsky.social are back baby!!!!

ANYWAY, did you know there's an extension you can put on Chrome that will connect with your local library system and when you go look at a book, say on AMZ, it will tell you if that book exists in the library system and if it's available? It's literally called Library Extension.
