I felt compelled to ask my parents about their lives under the Brazilian dictatorship after seeing the Academy Award-nominated "I’m Still Here." Here's what they told me and my thoughts on why this movie is more than an exercise in remembering some of the darkest chapters in the country’s history:

“On Sunday, for the first time ever, Brazil’s main television network will pre-empt the live broadcast of Rio de Janeiro’s famed Carnival samba parade to show the Oscars instead.”

“Older Brazilians carry the scars, in many cases literal ones, of their fight against dictatorship. This fight for them is visceral in a way it isn’t—yet—for Americans. Brazil has demonstrated how democracies that value themselves defend themselves. America could have done the same.”

Hi! I'm an immigration reporter with Mother Jones magazine. I'm hoping to connect with former and current EOIR employees about policy and personnel changes happening at the agency. We can talk off the record or on background. Please reach out at [email protected] or isabeladias.14 on Signal.

"Will I be safe walking from school to home and home to school? Will someone be waiting for me when I get off the bus?" Immigrant students are afraid. In the Boston area, teachers are grappling with spikes in school absences as a result of the threat of deportation. With @hurwitz.bsky.social:

SCOOP: In an email circulated today by the federal Department of the Interior, the Trump administration has issued a stop-work order for organizations providing legal services, funded by the Office of Refugee Resettlement, to unaccompanied minors entering the United States.

Hey! We at @motherjones.com/ @revealnews.org (aka, the Center for Investigative Reporting) are nominated for 4 National Magazine Awards: General Excellence Profile Podcast (with CPI) Reporting (with @themarshallproject.org & USAToday) + illustration awards too! www.asme.media/asme-announc...

"The government is essentially disappearing people into what has historically served as a legal black hole." My conversation with the lawyers working to stop the transfer of immigrants to Guantánamo:

New: Project 2025, which Russell Vought is the architect of, advocates for cutting NIH funding. But, it has been NIH-funded research that contributed to Vought’s own daughter having better treatment options for cystic fibrosis. www.motherjones.com/politics/202...

"When the rubber hit the road and ICE came to town, it’s not what the community actually wanted. That’s what will start to happen in other places if Trump 2.0 is more successful than Trump 1.0 was at pulling off mass deportation."

The Senate just voted to confirm Russ Vought as head of the Office of Management and Budget.

On an earnings call, the CEO of Palantir talked openly about killing “enemies,” then added, “I’m sure you’re enjoying this as much as I am!” www.motherjones.com/politics/202...

Trump's birthright citizenship executive order "conflicts with the plain language of the 14th Amendment, contradicts a 125-year-old binding Supreme Court precedent, and runs counter to our nation’s 250-year history." Wednesday's ruling was a big win for immigrants. But the legal battle isn't over.

BREAKING: Judge Deborah Boardman of the U.S. District Court of Maryland granted a nationwide preliminary injunction blocking the implementation of the Trump administration's executive order on birthright citizenship. The order, she ruled, conflicts with the plain language of the 14th Amendment.

If you work or used to work at DHS and/ or OMB and would like to share insight into what's happening there, please get in touch. I'm happy to answer questions and speak off the record or on background. Work: [email protected] Proton Mail: [email protected] Signal: isabeladias.14

"ICE staff being pulled from doing arrests in their home areas and condensed in large cities for larger-scale operations for public media campaigns. That doesn’t help ICE do its work day to day...I’ve seen probably the most anti-law enforcement steps, anti-public safety threats of any president."

As predicted, the Trump administration’s lawyers try to distinguish the Wong Kim Ark case. There is no serious discussion of the congressional debate over the 14th Amendment.

Got into a bit of historical trivia here: A little known fact about the 1920s is that it was followed by the 1930s.

At her confirmation hearing to lead the Department of Homeland Security, Kristi Noem says she will work with president-elect Trump to reinstate the "Remain in Mexico" policy. That program subjected tens of thousands of vulnerable migrants to kidnapping, assault, and extortion.

Ahead of Russ Vought's confirmation hearing to lead the Office of Management and Budget (again), here's a profile I wrote of him last year:

Trump touts his mass deportation agenda as necessary to root out violent criminals. But chances are those targeted by his administration will be people like Samuel Anthony, long-time residents who have baggage from an imperfect American life. My latest for @motherjones.com:

For @motherjones.com Eric Adams is looking to roll back sanctuary laws—possibly through executive orders—that provide due process protections in what critics say is an attempt to get a pardon from the incoming administration in his corruption case. www.motherjones.com/politics/202...

1/ In a 2015 interview with Trump about his mass deportation campaign promise, then-Fox News host Bill O’Reilly noted it couldn’t happen, in no small part because the 14th Amendment “says if you’re born here, you’re an American—and you can’t kick Americans out.”

Last year, I wrote about wrongful deportations and how there's little remedy available to help deportees with legitimate claims to return to the US. It's a story about how unforgiving the immigration—and criminal justice—systems are, but also about resilience. www.motherjones.com/politics/202...

Trump will aim to dispute more than a century of legal precedent and damage a bedrock constitutional understanding of what it means to be a US citizen. He cannot change everything with the stroke of a pen. But Trump can—and says he will—begin the long task of dismantling birthright citizenship.

Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy had a person they pushed to be in the Trump admin: Russell Vought. Here's our profile of Vought from @isabelaalhadeff.bsky.social . I wanted to take a moment to re-up it, and explain a few things that matter www.motherjones.com/politics/202...

Trump has tapped Russ Vought to serve as director of the Office of Management and Budget (OMB)—again. The first time around, Vought tried to reclassify almost 90 percent of the agency's workforce as at-will employees so they could be easily fired. www.motherjones.com/politics/202...

When 12-year-old Taylor Cadle said she was sexually abused, a detective threatened her with going back to foster care and accused her of lying. To vindicate herself, Taylor pulled out her phone and hit record. www.motherjones.com/criminal-jus...

In light of the breaking news that the Brazilian federal police has indicted Jair Bolsonaro and dozens of others over the alleged coup attempt following his defeat in the 2022 presidential election, it felt right to revisit this piece I wrote for @motherjones.com: www.motherjones.com/politics/202...

NEW VIDEO: Three ways mass deportations will fuck this country up. From billions of dollars in tax revenue to social security contributions, rising inflation rates, and crumbling infrastructure, we are not prepared for this. Reported by @isabelaalhadeff.bsky.social, video by me:

Tom Homan, the new Trump border czar, has actually said what he thinks might happen (when asked about how to avoid family separation): "families can be deported together" www.motherjones.com/politics/202...

Strategic litigation, emergency safety plans, and deportation defense work. Immigrant rights advocates who were at the forefront of the firewall to mitigate the harm of the first Trump administration’s attacks on immigrants are gearing up for another battle. www.motherjones.com/politics/202...

Published this the day before the election after talking to many Latino voters in the Central Valley. Sharing again now that the candidates are ~2,000 votes apart. www.motherjones.com/politics/202...

As @motherjones.bsky.social reported...several months ago www.motherjones.com/politics/202...

Schedule F would reassign dozens of thousands of policy-related jobs, stripping career civil servants from employment protections and making it easier to fire them. Policies will be pushed through with less internal resistance from longtime government employees. www.motherjones.com/politics/202...
