Dark side of bright nights taking toll on forgotten invertebrates

Maybe our humbleness re. other species should start with not making assumptions when we simply don't (yet) know: "A growing body of research suggests lots of species have intricate communication systems, and many exhibit qualities once deemed uniquely human."

Thomas O’Connor of Manna Organics shares how he transformed 25acres of bare hillside into an abundance of orchards, vegetable plots and native hedgerows. This is land stewardship at its finest. youtu.be/h84LUwnIs4U?...

Launching! 🚀 Today I'm launching a new service for landowners in Ireland who want to rewild their land. I hope this will be the start of a network that will promote rewilding in this country - the time is right! New social 🙋‍♂️ @rewildyourland.bsky.social take a look 👇 www.rewildyourland.ie

"The transition from release to reorganization is referred to as the ‘back-loop’ of the adaptive cycle. This phase is often fast moving and relatively short. In this phase the opportunity for redesign, reorganization and renewal is high..."

When the Oxford children's dictionary discarded dozens of nature-words—"dandelion," "fern," "starling"—as irrelevant to children's imagination and replaced them with words like "broadband" and "cut-and-paste," this inspired act of resistance was born: https://www.themarginalian.org/2019/06/17/the-l…

Scary times on planet earth. Please read.

This looks like an exciting new book by Richard Nairn about the wide array of nature restoration projects that are underway in Ireland.

Here is a little article I wrote on local food economies. #FeedingOurselves

“An estimated trillion insects are farmed per year; quadrillions are killed by pesticides, and many species have gone extinct as humans have cleared habitats for farms, factories, and cities. Most of us do not think much about their inner lives…”

This is quite old now, but fascinating on the deep embodied knowledge of biodiversity possessed by small-scale, non-intensive livestock farmers in Romania (and on the horrors of EU agricultural policy). youtu.be/rwHXEfkJ5HA?...

Reintroducing reindeer is only one part of this #rewilding effort. The connection between biodiversity, culture & language is often overlooked — but this project rejuvenates the culture around reindeer, restoring meaning and connection to the land, making it more likely people will protect it.

There will be a live stream of tonight's charity Christmas eve busk starting at 8pm. #Dublin #speirgorm

And so it goes... "Stop poisoning the air, the water, and the topsoil."

Guess it is time for one of those extremely rare dates with the telly in this house. An Cailín Ciúin - TG4, Christmas Day, 8pm.

“When the dark comes rising, six shall turn it back…” It’s 20 Dec—Winter Solstice Eve—& the day Susan Cooper’s great, cult novel The Dark Is Rising opens. Simon McBurney & I co-adapted a 12-part audio-drama of Susan’s novel. You can listen along, an ep a day, here: www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/brand...

As we approach Midwinter, here's The Black Stag from the cave of Lascaux. Considered to be either a creature of Ice Age myth, or a rendering of an extinct Megaloceros. Deep in the ground it was drawn above geometric symbols, including 13 circles, the meaning of which is now lost. #AncientSky 🌙🦌🦣🏺

Seed saving across Ireland In this 2-part series Eoin Murphy uncovers the fascinating world of seed saving, the grassroots efforts of seed conservation and its critical role in combating biodiversity loss. #SeedSavers

"In an ideal world, we would be welcoming Johannessen into the tent and working with him to understand this issue. In reality, though, equine sport has been caught between wanting to solve these kinds of problems and wishing they would go away." #equinewelfare #horsewelfare

Found this #MossyEarth article after a conversation with a landowner about foxes. UK & Ireland's anomalously high proportion of foxes & corvids makes a lot of sense in the context of declining birds of prey numbers. 1/2 #MesoPredatorRelease #Raptors #FoodChain shorturl.at/Yv0E5

Far Right doing badly in Irish Election, despite massive promotion*. Really useful indication of where the far right are, in terms of % of the first preference in the boxes opened, per constituency. Ireland is bucking the trend of European countries turning to far right.

Corn bunting. The last species to have gone extinct in Ireland. It happened in my lifetime. Ring ouzel looks set to be next. With 63% of Ireland’s birds either red or amber listed, we seriously need to change our ways or there will be many more.

Visit CELT's free open day near Loughrea, Co. Galway this Sunday, 24th Nov. Steve Bass will speak about hedgerows and the day will also feature traditional crafts, foraging, woodlands, wetlands, and spoken word in tribute to CELT's late co-founder, Bob Wilson. Register: celtnet.org/events/celt-...

"...how they are viewed as peripheral, yet in terms of renewable energy and recycling, these islands are way ahead of the Irish mainland." "But we have to start listening to the tacit knowledge that is deeply embedded in rural cultures where connection with nature has survived"

“What happens if we don’t accept this?” – if we dissect it to see its origins and impacts, or if we reject it, if we lift it off like some burden we don’t have to carry, some outfit we don’t have to wear? What happens is we get free."
