THIS! ⬇️ Western allies (including NZ) think it's OK to take part in massive US-led war gaming exercises targeted at China Yet in the past few days NZ has been shocked–shocked!–that China has dared to sail 3 warships through international waters in the Tasman www.scoop.co.nz/stories/HL25...

Drums of war are getting louder and a lack of critical voices are a sad indictment of the state of our media. Spending more on defence when education, health and infrastructure are in such a sad state should be critically dissected but there's nothing but pro-war voices www.rnz.co.nz/news/politic...

As schadenfreudelicious as it is to see Seymour & the govt bleeding political capital about this daily, what must we do to get this contract cancelled? This is actively harming our kids and their prospects.

Not only in Australia, the UK or USA! Where in the world is the higher education system doing well, I wonder?

Think about it.

“In the humanities meeting, the presentation’s slide on ‘mental health support’ prompted collective laughter (which was edited out of the official recording)” #AcademicSky

Everyone is on about Compass group producing that shitty level of food for $3. What no-one seems to be taking into account, is that they're producing that level of food for likely $1. You don't honestly believe that they're doing it at break even costings right? #nzpol

There is no more tech policy, only technopolitics. The liberal rules-based order has past & power is uninterested in performing reforms. Advocating tech sustainability, regulation and inclusion makes us the enemy within, and we need to focus on movement building and resistance.

It's OK we can make up any funding shortfall by (checks notes) commercialising our research and selling patents. Oh hang on, there might not be a market for research that's critical of capitalism www.stuff.co.nz/politics/360...

When will we have a review of university governance in aotearoa? We also have bloated VC salaries and poor decisions with no accountability www.afr.com/politics/fed...

More than 190 nations have signed a UN-backed moratorium on geoengineering—but dozens of new experiments have gone ahead in recent years, including at least 27 ocean fertilization experiments and 17 solar radiation management trials.

there's sort of a built-up default assumption in some quarters that misinformation and conspiracy theories are a product of Online and no doubt many are but sometimes it's also just like... the president making stuff up and telling it to the press corps on live tv

The hype bubble has burst. Silicon valley's monopolistic rentier capitalism model is under threat www.taxresearch.org.uk/Blog/2025/01...

"Ultimately, it is our money, and we should have a say." We are urging UniSaver to divest Aotearoa New Zealand university workers' savings and develop a BDS policy. Tell UniSaver they must divest from genocide and apartheid against the Palestinian people. youtube.com/shorts/9zmWN...

Devastating for scientists and their research, and everyone who benefits from that research. I’m not sure if everyone outside academia is aware that a delay or “pause” in grant funding often means the researchers themselves are lost from the field, along with their expertise.

Bishop Mariann Edgar Budde Hero.

Gotta love the British press.

100+ years of denying Palestinians their right to self determination, claiming their identity didn't exist, taking away their homes - and yet Palestinians remain. Nothing in this world will convince this nation to forget. The sooner this is understood, the better it will be for everyone.

Tell UniSaver to divest! It’s disgusting for this retirement scheme to spend members’ money on genocide. --> Email UniSaver's 'Relationship Manager': [email protected] --> Email UniSaver Member reps: [email protected]; [email protected]

From Aotearoa, we witness Palestinian people reuniting in this time of ceasefire, finally. And with relief comes resolve. It is more important than ever to divest all our money from genocide and apartheid, all of it, now. Tell UniSaver to divest 👇 youtube.com/shorts/-mR3o...

Thread: How did we get here? University Workers for Palestine (UWP) formed in 2024. At first, we needed to meet up for events and protests supporting Palestine. We needed to connect and consider how to push our institutions to Boycott and Divest from Israel.

This puts it well & it’s a point I keep making about why using AI to write is so flattening. Writing is the process of working out & refining what you think. If I write an article, I’m not just generating 1000 plausible words. I’m trying to articulate ideas with precision, & challenging myself.

Baudrillard's hyper-real. The image or simulacrum becomes more real than physical 'reality'

This is beautiful. And it gives your December laziness a noble purpose

Congratulations @unitehere.org !!! After 3 months on strike, workers won “an immediate $3/hour wage increase, raises throughout the contract's lifetime, increased pensions, additional protections against understaffing and workload increases, and preservation of workers' union health insurance plan”

I've been dreading this. The company had a big downgrade in quality this year while simultaneously nearly doubting the cost of their databases. Service is intermittent and tech support is barely available.
