Love this debut from Portuguese writer #InesViegasOliviera. “The Duel” is a profound and thoughtful tale of letting go of past conflicts and seeing beyond the hate. Two men duel but one just keeps walking. Change in palettes show the change in thought and outlook. Quietly great #PicturebookPage

My next book - a journey through child development from prenatal to age three - will be called Wonderment…and for good reason. There’s not a lot that arouses awe in us as adults. After a point we’ve mostly seen it all. We’ve been there and done that. Thread 🧵

Three triangles. Many tasks. One goal: to show how playful explorations of these mathematical objects can transform perspectives. Simple words can hold beauty and power in a poem, can simple mathematical objects hold the same? KS2/3 workshop @atmmathematics.bsky.social @mathematicala.bsky.social

This article by Skemp written in 1983 & reproduced in @atmmathematics.bsky.social MT journal 293 is still extremely pertinent: “if we were to teach music the way we teach maths we would only succeed in putting most of them off for life.” >>

www.early-years-reviews.com/play-matters We have some news. An update. You are not going to want to miss this. Play Matters will be out on March 18th 2025 🥳🥳🥳🥳 “Play Matters” – A Groundbreaking Free Guide to Champion the Power of Play in Early Childhood. #PlayMatters

I do like that my cats follow me everywhere, but when you discover the ultimate spot for hide and seek and the cat leads the children straight to you, it feels a little unfair. Perhaps I'm taking the game too seriously.

Residential done for another year. Wind, rain, sleepless nights, exhaustion, but still worth it. More important than ever for children to experience sights beyond the classroom. Especially when they look like this.

So… on a number line like this I know you could mark the number 0.5 and you could mark where the number ½ is, but where would you mark 50%? Or does 50% not fit on a number line?

**Coming soon** New website on early maths from earlymaths.org AND easy and appropriate research informed assessment indicators for spatial reasoning ChIPs. Take a look at our number and pattern ones👇🏼

Product Paths Create a path in a 3×3 grid (1-9). Split it into groups of 3 digits. Each group makes TO×O or OxTO multiplication. Score a point for each hundred in the products. Products must increase along path. How many possible points? #primarymaths #ukmathschat islesofwhatif.com/2025/01/08/p...

The difficulty at this time of year with three young children is working out where presents have been hastily hidden... Any ideas appreciated!

We know that 2024 isn't QUITE over yet but our friends over at the Association of Teachers of Mathematics have their first of their 2025 Micro CPD sessions planned on 14 January and it's sure to be good! Follow the QR code or visit the ATM website to find out more.

Mathematics for Human Flourishing is now in Turkish! yayinlar.tubitak.gov.tr/ana-sayfa/14... And if you're looking for other languages that it's appeared in--Spanish, Chinese (simplified and traditional), Romanian, Italian, Japanese, Korean--here are links: docs.google.com/document/d/1...

Sorry, but I really hope people who love THE WILD ROBOT movie know it was inspired by my book. It's mentioned in the credits but most people don't read that stuff. If you love the movie you should check out the book! There's more to the story and it's a quick read.

No 7 in my #FavePicturebooks24 is… “The Last Zookeeper” by @storybreathing. The visual storytelling in this book is utterly extraordinary, it’s rich in pathos and emotion without a single word. A modern day Noah’s Ark. A Magical #WordlessWonder. #PicturebookPage

Did an assembly on maths to Y4-6 Introduced a challenge. Lovely how many chn (and teachers!) then came to me with their own attempts Fold an A4 piece of paper four times. How many sides can be constructed from the folded shape? We outlined the perimeter each fold for reproducibility #PrimaryMaths

How would you answer a child's question "What does a mathematician do?" I think I'd start by saying that we notice patterns and try to explain them, but I'd love to hear other answers!

Mark making is so much more than pen on paper...

I'm sure there are many very clever uses of ai but in my family, what matters is our 'plonker status'. It asks one question about each of us each day. Then it decides on our status based on the answers. I'm clearly still facing the impact of past mishaps today...

If you’ve got some stats coming up with KS2 or KS3 then I think it’s well worth taking a look at slowrevealgraphs.com.

There needs to be time for children to #play alongside all the drive for 'high and rising standards'. It's not wrong to spend time exploring and discovering, especially in early years and primary. Not everything has to meet a standard or transfer specific knowledge. 😊 #EYFS #edusky
