Cell Systems asked us: "What is the main bottleneck in deriving biological understanding from spatial transcriptomic profiling?" In my opinion, the main bottleneck is our exploration of the data. Full article here (and below): www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

Such exhilarating 2day extravaganza of day+night science=fun+paradigm shifting science: lost art no more! Thanks a million @itaiyanai.bsky.social for the energy/enthusiasm brought to our ECRs. Learned so much. Let the conversations continue!

RIKEN-BDR is a blast to visit. We even started a ‘night science club’! Thank you Sameer, Yu-Chiun, and Li-Kun for being the most fantastic and generous hosts! @sameerthukral.bsky.social @yuchiunwang.bsky.social @phnglab.bsky.social

Visiting in Japan is really amazing but through many discussions it’s very noticeable how many people are now very worried about US science, which has been such a beacon of light for the longest time. AND: very much looking forward to these talks tomorrow!

Looking forward to this Night Science talk in one hour in Osaka University!

I'm much looking forward to visiting Kobe Japan in person tomorrow and giving a day science and a night science talk! Thank you Sameer for organizing this!

Was such a joy to chat about creativity, process, and how to make things with my old friend @itaiyanai.bsky.social and former co-fellow at @rad-institute.bsky.social. Always amazed how insight and creative work look similar across disciplines....❤️

Wow, I loved hearing her perspective. Super refreshing!

Join us at Mount Sinai on Monday for the next Postdoc Night Science NYC meeting! Register here: https//docs.google...

I'm really looking forward to this fantastic symposium in Osaka! Thank you to Kenji Kamimoto for being my wonderful host. And join us also tomorrow at 10:30 for a Night Science talk!

New episode of the Night Science Podcast comes out today! Meghan O'Rourke is the acclaimed author of "The Invisible Kingdom", a poet and a Yale professor. She explores with us the parallels between creative writing and scientific discovery: Night Poetry & Day Poetry! @meghanor.bsky.social

We have to fight now for research that we know benefits all of humanity, we have to stand up for our colleagues at the NIH, we can’t lie down and take it, we stand against this madness #standupforscience2025

We have to stand up for science! Anyone who can join these rallies and believes that US science must be protected should come! @standupforscience.bsky.social

Is Trump/Musk punishing science because most scientists did not vote for them?? How does Musk think he’s getting to Mars without science? How does Trump think the economy will grow without scientific innovations?

Don’t let the bastards get you down. There are 69 episodes of the Night Science podcast, aka rays of hope in these dark times! @nightsciencepod.bsky.social

Postdoc Night Science NYC! Our 3rd session will be Feb. 24th, 5-7pm at Mount Sinai. Come learn and practice the creative scientific process! This time we talk about the two languages of science. Thank you @kelseymonson.bsky.social for organizing. @stearnslab.bsky.social joins us as usual too! ⬇️

US science is under attack ‘Americans who value the spirit of discovery — and eagerly await new ways to confront disease, strengthen our economy and improve the quality of human life — need to issue a strong outcry.’ www.nytimes.com/2025/02/14/o...

Countries should be investing more money in science, not less. It’s pretty clear that many young minds will not be interested in becoming scientists if the salaries are not good and the future of this occupation is not certain.

“What if I’m wrong?” Scientists ask themselves this question all the time and think of ways to carefully test their ideas in controlled experiments. Is Co-President Elon Musk asking himself what if he’s wrong about completely changing how science is funded in the United States?

Science is under threat

Science and scientists are NOT the enemy! Science shines a bright light, bringing us better health (where does our medicine come from?), technology (where do our smart phones come from?), and a sense of wonder for life (remember how one of our greatest scientists described it?).

Until yesterday, there were two viable business models for US university science: 1. Money comes from undergrads paying tuition, and 2. Money comes from indirects on NIH grants (used by all academic medical centers). After Trump’s earthquake change, today only the first model may remain viable.

Science is absolutely key to the US's success but this government's intention to now dramatically reduce the part of the federal grants that go to the university (in addition to the researchers; the "indirects") is like removing the unseen roots of a tree and expecting it to continue to flourish.

👇 ... this ... we spoke about it for a while. Now we will do it! A sign up sheet for those interested is at the end of the thread. #theconferencetoendallconferences ... a conference formerly known as ... #physiologicalirrelevantconference

it'll be epic 👇

Woodstock 2.0 meets Night Science! June 10-13 in Prague & in the Woods of Bohemia Think about it: What do we require for doing good and enjoyable science? François Jacob said it well: we need ‘an atmosphere of enthusiasm, lucid criticism, nonconformism, and friendship’.🧵⬇️

“The Conference to End all Conferences” Woodstock 2.0 meets Night Science Join us!!

IT'S HAPPENING! The Woodstock of Biology 2.0 meets Night Science @nightsciencepod.bsky.social 10-13 of June in Prague & the Woods of Bohemia... Be there or be REJECTED. #theconferencetoendallconferences

I'm thrilled by the diversity of institutions represented at January's Postdoc Night Science NYC event, co-hosted at NYU by @itaiyanai.bsky.social and @stearnslab.bsky.social! (Thrilled enough to throw together a quick #Rstats plot to showcase it).

Fantastic thought provoking talk today by @itaiyanai.bsky.social at 🐅 @princetonupress.bsky.social ….first how we lost our tails against strong pressure, and then how cells develop resistance to drugs 🧫🧬🧪

Postdocs need a place to learn and practice the scientific creative process. Tomorrow we start the "Postdoc Night Science" club, the Princeton chapter! It's at the Friend Center Atrium and 58 Postdocs are already signed up!

Doing science is mostly just realizing that what you initially lack in expertise, you more than make up for with excitement
