Trump’s showerhead executive order will have virtually no effect because manufacturers have little interest in making showerheads that exceed the current limits, according to the executive director of the Appliance Standards Awareness Project. By @peterelkind.bsky.social

Now there's a memorable stat! "Colleges and universities are among America’s most competitive international exporters. In dollar terms, last year, the United States sold more educational services to the rest of the world than it sold in natural gas and coal combined." wapo.st/3EvzMCI

The entire staff of the Defense Digital Service (DDS), the Pentagon’s decade-old technology development office, is leaving by the start of May, with nearly all individuals resigning, after being sidelined by Musk’s DOGE www.politico.com/news/2025/04...

$28 billion was substantially all the revenue raised by Trump's first term tariffs. American tax payers paid 1/3 of farm revenue with the largest tax increase in a generation for Trump's first trade war. Farmers didn't say thank you once. They voted for his second trade war. Fuck 'em.

😮‍💨🫠

hope all the businesses who've been enjoying this month of tariffs also enjoy getting ransomware because they can't prioritize patching efficiently anymore

"road damage like potholes is caused by vehicle weight (per axle) to the fourth power. This means that a Tesla Cybertruck causes roughly 2^4, or 16x, the damage of a Honda Accord, which weighs about half as much."

NIMBY coalitions are fascinating. There is zero daylight between Peter Navarro Traci Park Rick Caruso Aisha Wahab on housing and transportation

If MAGA law profs admitted that constitutions are living documents, they could argue that the development of social ethics has brought us to the understanding that some babies should be denied citizenship. Disgusting and immoral, but coherent. Instead they pretend to "discover" things they make up.

Can't stop thinking about how Marco "99-0" Rubio signed a document submitted to the court that claimed he can deport anyone for their "past, current or EXPECTED beliefs"

Well okay then. It looks like someone has considered the administrative clusterfuck that is the DMV and looked into it like it was their job, and they're really good at it. calmatters.org/investigatio...

"The state suspends a driver’s license for accumulating four points in a year, six points in two years or eight points in three years... Using a cellphone while driving is zero points. A speeding ticket is a point. Vehicular manslaughter is two points." calmatters.org/investigatio...

License to Kill The California DMV routinely allows dangerous drivers with horrifying histories to continue to operate on our roadways. Too often they go on to kill. Many keep driving even after they kill. Some go on to kill again. calmatters.org/investigatio...

We don't allow people who kill with guns to own them again. But we allow people who kill with cars keep driving. That's #motonormativity badmomgoodmom.blogspot.com/2025/04/moto...

Stephen Miller is truly one of the most craven, awful, horrifying people I have reported on in my life. It is a blight on our nation so long as he has any power.

Since the Trump admin continues to claim Mr. Abrego Garcia is a gang member, I thought I'd take the time to put together a timeline, based on all the documents filed in court, which lays out all the "evidence" the government has ever offered. As you'll find out, there's very little "there" there!

I am sorry to say it, but this is probably one of the most important things you can repost today.

Or "pulled off the streets and removed to a foreign country to be imprisoned without any process" at a bare minimum.

I gave the rottweiler who killed all of my friends' babies a big, juicy steak and I'm here to tell you that you're all being a little melodramatic about Murderer the Rottweiler.

One down, so many to go... www.latimes.com/california/s...

I apparently bought a wool sweater and a wool jacket... in April. I blame the anesthesia.

Fantastic thread. ⤵️ tl,dr: LA’s real estate transfer tax, meant to fund affordable housing, is killing more BMR units than it funds (and loads of market-rate units to boot)

.@ShaneDPhillips is a model of intellectual integrity. He was a supporter of Measure ULA. Now he's conducted and published a study showing it didn't work out as he had hoped. More of us should be like Shane.

Committee chairs don't materialize out of the ether and they're not chosen by lot. If CA's Democratic leadership doesn't want to further tarnish the party's brand, they can put someone else in charge. Or leg leadership can just pull bills out of committee.

I'm genuinely befuddled as to the circumstances where we would need the President to be able to levy an import duty as an emergency measure. Someone wargame that for me.

Fun wrinkle, this will surely kill the LLM bubble, right? Do we need to add the term "clawback" to the contract on any executive that signs off on these?

“I’ve been disappeared because a rainforest killing plagiarism machine picked me out of a hat”, coming to a dystopia near you

This is what its like to work in the Trump administration now. When a career official objected to declaring that living immigrants were dead on legal and ethical grounds, security guards went to his office and told him to leave. www.washingtonpost.com/politics/202...

Snarks aside, what drives my batsh*t about statements like this is that if high-demand cities allowed lots of efficiency apartments to be built, fewer young singles would band together as roommates & compete for the "family sized" units that others would like to raise their family in.

Why does no one wonder about the DMV? Here is what must be the largest expansion of the administrative state in 100 years. It registers the most voters, is responsible for citizen identification, and on the side I guess it regulates drivers... theoretically.

The kakistocracy is also a kleptocracy.

This would be way more compelling if she wasn't personally responsible for lots of those kids having nowhere to sleep.

Though acutely aware of the public health crisis of traffic violence, I was nonetheless shocked on trauma surgery rotation (at a Level I trauma center in CA) to see the vast majority of patients on our census were traffic violence victims. Many requiring ICU care. And these were the ones who lived.

Putting up a few thoughts on the latest tariff swerve paulkrugman.substack.com/p/the-trump-...
