This is such a good articulation of the shortcomings of social media activism.

Bellingham is looking to allow all sorts of “missing middle” housing types in residential zones across the city. It’s just one of many strategies to increase the housing inventory but at least it’s something. @strongtowns.org

@sophia-gates.bsky.social has really been cranking out bangers lately

I absolutely got my butt kicked by some kind of respiratory thing this week. Stay safe out there!

Two years ago, developer Youri Benoiston raised $1.2 million on Indiegogo to fund an ambitious vacation rental project that promised luxury in a unique package. Now, he is once again requesting funds from the public — and hopes to raise another $1.2 million.

I love the Samish Crest.

I’m not crying, you’re crying.

I wrote something that’s not just about bikes. www.about-ride.com/articles/i-u...

I have written dozens of event and race previews over the years, and some were admittedly half-assed. It’s fun to actually put in the effort of talking to folks to get more than just the basics. The CDN tagline: better than the bare minimum.

@simonelli.bsky.social with a banger this week

This is exciting news but also while I was writing this I learned more about the county’s 2014 reconveyance of 8,000 acres of protected public land in the watershed that I love exploring today.

Cy’s on BS now, go follow him.

I couldn’t figure out the hook of this complicated yet (tbh) insignificant story that mattered so much to the folks living there. Then I saw how @haileyjhoffman.bsky.social chose to capture it visually and I was like oh yeah duh. The sad golf course is the whole point.

I love riding the bus and I really love this @cascadiadaily.com piece by @charlottealden.bsky.social and Sophia about balancing ridership versus coverage transit models.

Ugh

Who’s responsible for providing emergency medical care to people, many of whom are visitors, that recreate in what is essentially a city park in the unincorporated county, on land that doesn’t provide a tax base for the nearby agency that is trained and equipped to respond? Yeah, it’s a puzzle.

Meanwhile Cy’s out here picking a fight with all the Brits and Canadians.

Increased lethality, increased impacts to infrastructure, increased impacts to the environment.

I’m almost done reflecting on 2024 but I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention the only time I’ve ever had an article go viral. An exclusive interview with the hiker who went missing in the North Cascades for a month:

My favorite thing to write this year. I was still freelancing at @cascadiadaily.com with only one foot in the door and then they pitched me a “what’s with that weird property” story (my catnip) and I like to think that’s how I busted the door down.

My favorite newsletter read of the year, by the very rad @amonthei.bsky.social

My favorite long read of the year:

Bellingham is making residential organics collection mandatory. It’ll be interesting to see how this plays out. (I’m a fan.)

From the repeal campaign to contractor woes, the Healthy Children’s Fund has been my favorite ongoing topic to cover this year. It’s big hairy audacious public policy built to address multiple crises creatively within the limiting and sometimes stifling structure of bureaucracy.

Cities across the country have eliminated parking minimums to advance to housing and climate goals. Now, Bellingham has taken steps to join those cities, with city council voting 6-1 to eliminate parking minimums citywide on Monday, Dec. 16.

In December 2023, I watched from afar as my future colleagues at the CDN covered this tragedy with tenacity and compassion, and it made me want to work there more than anything. I was honored to continue the story a year down the road.

My (biased) favorite prediction: “The print revival comes to news”

Construction waste makes up almost a quarter of the waste stream in Washington, meaning nonprofits, governments and the private sector are eyeing it as a big diversion opportunity.

@cocoalaney.bsky.social and @finnwendt.com putting out great work as usual 🐓

Where will your ghost bike go? It’s just another way of stating the question I asked last week, this time eloquently articulated by Andrew over at Meat Engines.

If you’ve taken Mount Baker Highway in or out of Bellingham at any point in the last few years, you’ve probably noticed a marquee-style sign bearing tongue-in-cheek sayings. That's thanks to Kevin Smeall, local "sign guy."

@cascadiadaily.com wrapping paper in this week’s issue 😍

It’s not a morbid question, just curiosity about the inevitable. @seattlebikeblog.com @thewaroncars.bsky.social

A similar message gets shared every year around the holidays but will people ever stop prioritizing convenience and cheapness over maintaining the fabric of our communities? Don’t buy things from online megastores. Period.

This excellent @cascadiadaily.com piece reminded me of Grand Teton National Park’s questionable mountain goat cull a few years ago that was supposed to benefit the big horn sheep herd. Humans are so strange.

In light of Black Diamond recalling yet another transceiver yesterday, I might as well reshare this piece I wrote for Powder last year.
